The country has pivoted hard to <a href=\"https:\/\/globalenergymonitor.org\/report\/a-race-to-the-top-china-2023-chinas-quest-for-energy-security-drives-wind-and-solar-development\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:renewable energy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">renewable energy<\/a> in recent years and now has a near-monopoly on global solar energy and panel production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A video circulating recently on social media highlights the sheer scale of the operation, showing an entire mountain range in the Guizhou province of China blanketed in solar panels. The drone footage reveals a virtual sea of solar panels and access roads stretching as far as the eye can see.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"mb-4 border-l-2 pl-5 italic text-battleship dark:text-bob\"\/>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Thanks to its high altitude and moody climate, the mountainous province makes a poor location for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantis-press.com\/journals\/jracr\/125932623\/view\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:industrial agricultural;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">industrial agricultural<\/a>. But those disadvantages also make the province a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.people.cn\/n3\/2024\/0102\/c98649-20117313.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:prime location;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">prime location<\/a> for solar installations \u2014 something the region has embraced in recent decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"http:\/\/guizhou.chinadaily.com.cn\/2021-09\/06\/c_659882.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Per\u00a0China Daily;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Per\u00a0<em>China Daily<\/em><\/a>, the provinces&#8217; first solar installation went online in 2015, but it was slow going as the nation set about achieving its ambitious renewable energy goals. By 2018, Guizhou was generating about 1.75 million kilowatts in solar energy per year<strong>, <\/strong>enough for around 1300 households (for context, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/heliyon\/fulltext\/S2405-8440(24)06161-9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:average Chinese household;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">average Chinese household<\/a> used 1332 kilowatts per year in 2024).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">By 2020, Guizhou reportedly reached over 10 million kilowatts in solar capacity, fueled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/business\/china-sets-2019-subsidies-for-large-scale-solar-power-projects-at-248-million-idUSKCN1U617F\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:government subsidies;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">government subsidies<\/a>, cheap bank loans for renewable energy companies, and cheap real estate in the province. By 2023, that number reached <a href=\"https:\/\/global.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/202307\/11\/WS64ad08bca31035260b815c7d.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:15 million kilowatts;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">15 million kilowatts<\/a> \u2014 and it doesn&#8217;t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Chinese government had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/news\/statement-china-commits-stronger-climate-targets-climate-ambition-summit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:previously promised;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">previously promised<\/a>\u00a0in 2020 to triple its renewable energy output by 2030. It was an ambitious goal, especially as China was the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalenergymonitor.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/China-Dominates-2020-Coal-Development.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:world-leader;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">world-leader<\/a> in coal energy production, a major source of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/03\/business\/energy-environment\/china-coal-natural-gas.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:tension;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">tension<\/a> for China hawks in the West.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As of 2024, China was responsible for 64 percent of the world&#8217;s utility-scale solar and wind construction, with <a href=\"https:\/\/globalenergymonitor.org\/report\/china-continues-to-lead-the-world-in-wind-and-solar-with-twice-as-much-capacity-under-construction-as-the-rest-of-the-world-combined\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:339 gigawatt hours;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">339 gigawatt hours<\/a> of renewable energy infrastructure under construction. The next four producers, by comparison \u2014 the US, Brazil, the UK, and Spain \u2014 had a combined total of 72 gigawatt hours of renewable capacity under construction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">If solar infrastructure continues to grow at its current pace, Beijing could hit its renewable energy target as early as <a href=\"https:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/features\/china-renewable-energy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:this year;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Still, China has a long way to go in its long marathon toward <a href=\"https:\/\/interactive.carbonbrief.org\/the-carbon-brief-profile-china\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:carbon neutrality;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">carbon neutrality<\/a>, something President Xi hopes to hit before 2060.
