{"id":48858,"date":"2025-05-10T09:18:59","date_gmt":"2025-05-10T13:18:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/european-leaders-visit-kyiv-in-a-show-of-solidarity-for-ukraine\/10\/05\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-05-10T09:18:59","modified_gmt":"2025-05-10T13:18:59","slug":"european-leaders-visit-kyiv-in-a-show-of-solidarity-for-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/european-leaders-visit-kyiv-in-a-show-of-solidarity-for-ukraine\/10\/05\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"European Leaders Visit Kyiv in a Show of Solidarity for Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Poland arrived together in Kyiv on Saturday for their first-ever joint visit to Ukraine, pledging to intensify pressure on Russia until it agreed to a full, unconditional 30-day cease-fire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ukraine\u2019s foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, released a photograph of President Volodymyr Zelensky and the four other European leaders huddled around a phone as, Mr. Sybiha said, they spoke with President Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cUkraine and all allies are ready for a full unconditional ceasefire on land, air, and at sea for at least 30 days starting already on Monday,\u201d Mr. Sybiha <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/andrii_sybiha\/status\/1921151272842830061\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote on social media<\/a>. \u201cIf Russia agrees and effective monitoring is ensured, a durable ceasefire and confidence-building measures can pave the way to peace negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The visit was intended to underscore Europe\u2019s commitment to Ukraine after more than three years of war with Russia. It came one day after Russia\u2019s celebration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, during which President Vladimir V. Putin welcomed President Xi Jinping of China and other foreign dignitaries to Moscow for a military parade meant to project Russia\u2019s power and Mr. Putin\u2019s bid to reshape the global order on his terms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The two events crystallized both the changing contours of the war in Ukraine and the broader geopolitical shift underway since Mr. Trump entered office. In just a few months, Mr. Trump has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/01\/world\/europe\/100-days-trump-us-foreign-policy.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">reversed core tenets of U.S. foreign policy<\/a>, and is presiding over the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/08\/world\/europe\/europe-ve-day-trump.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">weakening of the trans-Atlantic bond<\/a> that helped set Europe on the path to peace after the cataclysm of World War II.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the moment, Ukraine is caught between an emboldened Russia, buoyed by China, North Korea and Iran, and a Europe <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/05\/world\/europe\/trump-europe-tariffs-defense.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">scrambling to fill the void<\/a> left by the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It has been more than 120 days since the United States announced a new round of military assistance to Ukraine. It remains unclear if the Trump administration plans to spend the remaining $3.85 billion that Congress has authorized for additional withdrawals from the Defense Department\u2019s stockpiles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Most of the pressure Washington has brought to bear to end the fighting has been directed at Kyiv, though Mr. Trump has recently shown <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/24\/us\/politics\/russia-trump-putin-ukraine.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">flashes of frustration<\/a> with Moscow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">European leaders are hoping that frustration may lead Washington to take steps to pressure Moscow directly, perhaps by increasing sanctions aimed at the oil and gas revenues the Kremlin uses to finance its war efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dmitri S. Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, dismissed the threat of new sanctions by Western leaders, on Saturday telling <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/ura.news\/news\/1052931170\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Russian broadcaster Rossiya-1<\/a> that the country is \u201caccustomed to such pressure measures and knows how to minimize their consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Daniel Fried, a former top U.S. diplomat and fellow at the Atlantic Council in Washington, said there was hope that the American and European policies on Ukraine are converging but many tests remained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe moment of truth\u201d will come, he said, if Mr. Putin refuses the 30-day cease-fire, raising the questions of whether United States imposes more sanctions and offers more military assistance. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If there is a cease-fire, he said, the next test may come if Russia violates the truce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat, then, will be the U.S. response?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The visit by the European leaders, he said, was a smart response to the Mr. Putin\u2019s recent propaganda blitz and an important demonstration of solidarity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">France\u2019s president, Emmanuel Macron; the new German chancellor, Friedrich Merz; the British prime minister, Keir Starmer; and the Polish prime minister, Donald Tusk, started their visit to Kyiv with a solemn tribute to the thousands of Ukrainian soldiers killed in battle, laying flowers at a makeshift memorial in the capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The European leaders said they would discuss ways to strengthen the Ukrainian military to ensure that any future peace deal proves enduring. Along with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, they were scheduled to hold a virtual briefing with other world leaders that make up a group they are calling <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/03\/world\/europe\/europe-ukraine-russia.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a \u201ccoalition of the willing.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the coming weeks will test whether European resolve and resources can match the scale of the challenge as the war\u2019s outcome increasingly becomes Europe\u2019s problem to solve.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Despite months of frenetic diplomatic activity and Mr. Trump\u2019s stated desire to bring the fighting to an end, the chasm separating the warring sides is as deep as ever.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kyiv has agreed to the unconditional 30-day cease-fire <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/09\/world\/europe\/ukraine-russia-zelensky-trump-peace-talks.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">proposed by the United States<\/a>. At the same time, Ukraine is racing to build up its domestic arms production and its European allies have increased their military assistance.
