The Canadian rapper Tory Lanez was hospitalized on Monday after being attacked in the California prison where he is serving a 10-year sentence for shooting the hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion, the authorities said.<\/p>\n
Mr. Lanez, 32, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was attacked by another prisoner on Monday morning at a prison in Tehachapi, near Bakersfield, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Mr. Lanez was transported to a medical facility outside the prison, the department said. In an update on Tuesday, corrections officials said that Mr. Lanez was in fair condition. They did not elaborate on the nature of the attack, but a statement<\/a> posted on the rapper\u2019s Instagram account late Monday said that he had been stabbed 14 times.<\/p>\n \u201cBoth of his lungs collapsed, and he was placed on a breathing apparatus,\u201d the statement said. \u201cHe is now breathing on his own.\u201d A representative for Mr. Lanez said on Monday night that he had no updates beyond the statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n On Tuesday, the corrections department identified the inmate who attacked Mr. Lanez as Santino Casio, 42, who it said is serving a life sentence for second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, personal use of a dangerous or deadly weapon, and inflicting great bodily injury. The department said that Mr. Casio, who is eligible for parole, was placed in restricted housing while the authorities investigated the attack. <\/p>\n In August 2023, a Los Angeles judge sentenced Mr. Lanez<\/a> to 10 years in prison after a jury found him guilty<\/a> of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in both her feet following an argument three years earlier. He was convicted on three felony counts, including assault with a semiautomatic handgun.<\/p>\n At the time of the shooting, Megan Thee Stallion had been on a steep trajectory to stardom, thanks in large part to blockbuster collaborations with Beyonc\u00e9 and Cardi B.<\/p>\n Last year, Megan Thee Stallion asked for a restraining order<\/a> against Mr. Lanez.
