In some towns, untreated sewage flows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2673-9410\/4\/1\/9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:directly into rivers;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">directly into rivers<\/a>, contaminating water sources and harming both ecosystems and public health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For decades, the global response to wastewater has been to clean the water in large wastewater facilities designed to remove physical, chemical and biological contaminants from domestic wastewater (toilets) or industrial effluent. Wastewater plants produce treated water that is safe to discharge into rivers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But they\u2019re expensive and energy intensive. They\u2019re also difficult to maintain in rural areas where local government doesn\u2019t get much revenue.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"my-4\"\/>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em> <strong> Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/wastewater-is-a-valuable-source-of-information-africas-scientists-need-to-use-it-to-find-drug-resistant-bacteria-202050\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Wastewater is a valuable source of information -- Africa's scientists need to use it to find drug-resistant bacteria;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Wastewater is a valuable source of information &#8212; Africa&#8217;s scientists need to use it to find drug-resistant bacteria<\/a> <\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<hr class=\"my-4\"\/>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I was part of a team of scientists led by environmental management researcher and professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Paul-Oberholster\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Paul Oberholster;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Paul Oberholster<\/a>, who set out to look for a much simpler and greener solution in a small town in South Africa\u2019s Limpopo province. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/phycology4010009\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Our research found;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Our research found<\/a> that algae \u2013 the same green organisms often dismissed as pond scum \u2013 could offer a low-cost, low-tech way to clean domestic sewage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The team inserted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csir.co.za\/algae-based-wastewater-treatment-solution\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:tiny microalgae;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">tiny microalgae<\/a> into the ponds at the Motetema Wastewater Treatment Works in Limpopo. The microalgae removed pathogens without using any chemicals or mechanical equipment that runs on electricity. They cleaned up the sewage from 1,560 homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This is a sustainable, low-cost approach to wastewater treatment that can improve public health and the environment in small towns, especially those with limited infrastructure and unreliable electricity. And it\u2019s especially important to find ways of cleaning wastewater that don\u2019t cost much or use electricity because climate change <a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/publication-series\/state-of-climate-africa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:increases water stress;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">increases water stress<\/a> and energy costs across the continent.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">A nature-based approach to wastewater<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Nitrogen and phosphorus are nutrients that are found in human waste, detergents, fertilisers, and polluted water that runs off from big farms into rivers. Untreated sewage is a major source of these nutrients. When they build up in rivers or lakes, they trigger the overgrowth of algae. As the algae die and decompose, they use up oxygen in the water. Their main energy source is light, and they\u2019re able to grow quickly if they have enough. This helps aerobes \u2013 the bacteria that survive and grow only in the presence of oxygen in their environment \u2013 to break down organic matter, such as human waste, food residues, and other biodegradable substances present in wastewater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In other words, the algae provide the oxygen, and the bacteria do the heavy lifting of cleaning up the sewage. Algae have been used in wastewater treatment ponds in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1474706503001840\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:southern Africa;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">southern Africa<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0048969720356977\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:US, Europe;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">US, Europe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0043135412000735\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Central Asia;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Central Asia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1364032112007320\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:India;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">India<\/a> for decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But what sets the Motetema project apart is the use of two fast-growing algae species (<em>Chlorella vulgaris<\/em> and <em>Chlorella protothecoides<\/em>), selected (after testing dozens of strains of algae) for their remarkable ability to absorb nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The team wanted to make sure that they\u2019d have enough of the microalgae to clean all the wastewater. So we grew huge amounts in photobioreactors (transparent tanks designed to provide the best light and conditions for algae to grow). Think of a photobioreactor as a high-tech greenhouse for microscopic plants, where light, carbon dioxide and nutrients are carefully controlled to maximise growth.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"my-4\"\/>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em> <strong> Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/wetlands-do-the-job-of-expensive-technology-if-we-let-them-125452\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Wetlands do the job of expensive technology, if we let them;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Wetlands do the job of expensive technology, if we let them<\/a> <\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<hr class=\"my-4\"\/>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The team then inserted the microalgae into the town\u2019s wastewater ponds. The results were remarkable. After one year, the treatment system achieved:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\"\/>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">83% reduction in orthophosphate<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">73% reduction in total nitrogen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ammonia and nitrogen can be toxic to fish and aquatic life. Phosphorus (measured as orthophosphate) fuels harmful algal blooms. So it was great to see that the microalgae cleaned these out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Overall, between 73% and 99% of key pollutants were removed by the algae within a year. Before this, the treatment ponds often released effluent into the environment. But with phycoremediation in place, the treated water met environmental safety thresholds and could be released without causing harm.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">A solution rooted in rural realities<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Motetema is a small, rural town of around 11,000 people. The wastewater system there consists of 12 large treatment ponds. One set of six ponds operates while the other is cleaned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The system treats around 4.5 million litres of domestic sewage per day. But this amount is nearly double what the treatment ponds were originally designed to handle, and the wastewater system was struggling to cope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Across South Africa, wastewater treatment plants are <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.co.za\/doi\/full\/10.10520\/ejc-adminpub_v30_n4_a10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:outdated, underfunded and rarely enlarged;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">outdated, underfunded and rarely enlarged<\/a> to cope with population increases. Many towns already use pond systems for wastewater treatment. These systems often underperform because of electricity cuts, poor maintenance and limited budgets for the necessary chemicals. There is also a lack of skilled operators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But algae don\u2019t need salaries or power. With the right strains, simple culturing, and periodic injection into the ponds, these can become effective wastewater systems.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Other rural areas could benefit<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Phycoremediation needs land as each pond covers nearly 40,000 square metres. That makes it ideal for rural towns with space available. It also takes at least two to three weeks for the algae to clean wastewater. This means the ponds also need to be large enough to hold all the town\u2019s sewage so that it is fully cleaned by the algae.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Like any natural system, phycoremediation is not without its quirks. In Motetema, the project encountered:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">an overgrowth of duckweed \u2013 a small, fast-growing floating plant often found on stagnant water surfaces. This blocked the sunlight needed for the algae to do their work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">seasonal wildfires, which damaged bioreactor piping<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">peak-hour sewage surges, which briefly overwhelmed the system<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">sludge buildup, which reduced the volume of space in the pond and delayed purification of the wastewater.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">These are manageable issues, and highlight that these natural ponds will need some support, including adding fresh, healthy algae from time to time and basic maintenance.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">What needs to happen next<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This model needs support from municipalities and policymakers. Then it could be replicated across thousands of rural settlements in Africa where conventional wastewater treatment plants are too expensive or difficult to maintain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Phycoremediation also challenges how we think about wastewater.
