{"id":49866,"date":"2025-06-11T08:10:34","date_gmt":"2025-06-11T12:10:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/anti-immigrant-rioting-stretches-into-second-night-in-northern-ireland\/11\/06\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-06-11T08:10:34","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T12:10:34","slug":"anti-immigrant-rioting-stretches-into-second-night-in-northern-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/anti-immigrant-rioting-stretches-into-second-night-in-northern-ireland\/11\/06\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-Immigrant Rioting Stretches Into Second Night in Northern Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A second night of rioting and disorder struck the town of Ballymena in Northern Ireland on Tuesday, as anti-immigrant protests spread to several other areas and the police warned of \u201chate-fueled acts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Homes, businesses and vehicles were again attacked in the Clonavon Terrace area of Ballymena, where several properties were set on fire on Monday night following a demonstration over the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Police officers came under \u201csustained attack\u201d with petrol bombs, bricks and fireworks on Tuesday evening, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psni.police.uk\/latest-news\/police-service-statement-second-night-violence-ballymena\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to<\/a> a statement from the Police Service of Northern Ireland, and 17 officers were injured.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The police used a water cannon against crowds and fired plastic baton rounds in Ballymena, while disorder also took place in parts of Belfast and in the town of Carrickfergus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Earlier in the evening, protests had taken place in areas of Belfast, as well as in Lisburn, Coleraine and Newtownabbey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">They followed the appearance in court on Monday of two 14-year-old boys who had been charged with the serious sexual assault of a teenage girl on Saturday night. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Both boys have been charged with attempted oral rape and deny the charges, the<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c98p0696r4do\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> BBC reported<\/a>, adding that they had confirmed their names and ages through a Romanian interpreter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Wednesday morning, signs and flags had appeared on some homes in the area of Ballymena where the assault and riots took place stating the nationality of those inside.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBritish household,\u201d read one handwritten sign above a smashed window, while another home displayed a picture of the Philippines flag with the words: \u201cFilipino lives here.\u201d<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-small css-1189og3 e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-13ytnnu ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-jevhma e13ogyst0\">A boarded up window following a second night of violence in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, on Wednesday.<\/span><span class=\"css-14fe1uy e1z0qqy90\"><span class=\"css-1ly73wi e1tej78p0\">Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Niall Carson\/PA Images, via Getty Images<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Chief Constable Jon Boutcher, who leads the Police Service of Northern Ireland, said: \u201cThe mindless violence witnessed over the past two nights in Ballymena is deeply concerning and utterly unacceptable. These criminal acts not only endanger lives but also risk undermining the ongoing criminal justice process in support of a victim who deserves truth, justice, and protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He said police were reviewing video footage and other evidence to identify rioters, and condemned what he called \u201chate-fueled acts and mob rule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Five people were arrested on suspicion of rioting in Ballymena on Tuesday night, while another suspect was arrested for disorder in Newtownabbey, north of Belfast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">This is a developing story.
