As Muslims from across the world travelled to Mecca in Saudi Arabia for the annual hajj pilgrimage in early June 2025<\/span>, images of an aircraft in flames were shared on social media alongside claims that a Mauritanian plane carrying pilgrims had crashed, killing over 200 people<\/span>. This is false; one of the photographs dates back 18 years to an unrelated event in the Republic of the Congo, while a second image shows an air disaster in South Korea from December 2024 <\/span>. The Mauritanian government also denied the claims.<\/strong><\/h3>\n
