In Cambodia, foreign criminal groups have also infiltrated to engage in online scams,\u201d Hun Manet\u2019s statement, dated Tuesday, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cambodia-myanmar-migrants-online-scams-ebab962f236df69b1f9b7e136958e244\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:United Nations;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">United Nations<\/a> and other agencies estimate that cyberscams, most of them <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/asian-scam-operations-cybercime-fraud-united-nations-494b1832f330d6a9690b083411809f93\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:originating from Southeast Asia;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">originating from Southeast Asia<\/a>, earn international criminal gangs billions of dollars annually.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">More than 1,000 suspects were arrested in raids in at least five provinces between Monday and Wednesday, according to statements from Information Minister Neth Pheaktra and police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Those detained included more than 200 Vietnamese, 27 Chinese, and 75 suspects from Taiwan and 85 Cambodians in the capital Phnom Penh and the southern city of Sihanoukville. Police also seized equipment, including computers and hundreds of mobile phones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">At least 270 Indonesians, including 45 women, were arrested Wednesday in Poipet, a town on the border with Thailand notorious for cyberscam and gambling operations, the minister said. Elsewhere, police in the northeastern province of Kratie arrested 312 people, including nationals of Thailand, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar and Vietnam, while 27 people from Vietnam, China and Myanmar were arrested in the western province of Pursat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Amnesty International last month published the findings of an 18-month investigation into cybercrime in Cambodia, which the human rights group said \u201cpoint towards state complicity in abuses carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/justice-department-china-fbi-hacking-0bd01004160d63904374bb25cf3eae6c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Chinese criminal;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Chinese criminal<\/a> gangs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe Cambodian government is deliberately ignoring a litany of human rights abuses including slavery, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cambodia-scam-compound-shelter-us-funding-freeze-6bc436aeffd46c47b049413e73987d14\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:human trafficking;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">human trafficking<\/a>, child labor and torture being carried out by criminal gangs on a vast scale in more than 50 scamming compounds located across the country,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Human trafficking is closely associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hong-hong-anti-scam-operation-arrests-7fc6f1a9a1d68a648de26dfe1308abfc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:cyberscam operations;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">cyberscam operations<\/a>, as workers are often recruited under false pretences and then held captive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cDeceived, trafficked and enslaved, the survivors of these scamming compounds describe being trapped in a living nightmare \u2013 enlisted in criminal enterprises that are operating with the apparent consent of the Cambodian government,\u201d Amnesty International\u2019s Secretary General Agnes Callamard said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Cambodia&#8217;s latest crackdown comes in the midst of a bitter <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cambodial-thailand-border-conflict-explainer-6a897419733edb91a76fffa31d4aba15\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:feud with neighboring Thailand;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">feud with neighboring Thailand<\/a>, which began with a brief armed skirmish in late May over border territory claimed by both nations and has now led to border closures and nearly daily exchanges of nationalistic insults. Friendly former leaders of both countries have become estranged and there have been hot debates over which nation\u2019s cultural heritage has influenced the other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Measures initiated by the Thai side, including cutting off cross-border electricity supplies and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-cambodia-border-dispute-cybercrime-scam-f2e9cc7b8c844ae4711ced217705d355\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:closing crossing points,;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">closing crossing points,<\/a> have particularly heightened tensions, with Cambodia claiming they were churlish actions of spite to retaliate for its intention to pursue its territorial claims.
