Would you rather risk near-certain death<\/a>, or spending the next five years of your life in a foreign prison<\/a>?\u00a0It\u2019s not a question you\u2019ll face too often from the comfort and safety of home, but should you choose to go to India and ride a motorcycle<\/a> to the highest motorable pass in the world, it\u2019s a decision you\u2019ll have to make four, maybe five times a day.<\/p>\n

I should probably explain.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the situation: You\u2019re going around a blind gravel corner at 60 miles an hour. To your left, there\u2019s a sheer cliff<\/a> and a 100-foot drop into a boulder-strewn river. To your right (where you\u2019d normally find a shoulder), the road ends abruptly in a jagged wall of granite<\/a>.\u00a0Between these two extremes, three travelers share a one-lane road: there\u2019s you on your motorcycle, there\u2019s a fully-loaded semi-truck coming in the opposite direction, and then there\u2019s a fully-grown bull standing in the middle of the road, completely oblivious to the dilemma.<\/p>\n
