Damari went on to say that one of the moments that gave her strength during captivity was watching her \u201camazing\u201d mom campaign for her release. For some of her time in captivity, she thought her mother and one of her brothers were dead.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was my best moment in my life in my worst place in my life. I found out she was alive, and she was fighting for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
She also noted that she saw protests at Columbia University during her time in captivity, which made her feel conflicted.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remember sitting there, looking at [the protesters] on Al-Jazeera. I\u2019m gay, but I\u2019m watching [the protesters] on TV and thinking: \u2018He\u2019s gay, she\u2019s gay, he\u2019s gay\u2019, and I\u2019m looking at the terrorist and I\u2019m saying: \u2018If they knew that they would come to Gaza and they wouldn\u2019t come out, maybe they wouldn\u2019t do it.\u2019 And he\u2019s looking at me smiling, as if to say: \u2018You\u2019re right.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
She also described how her determination carried her through the last minutes of her captivity.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey gave me a red sweatshirt to try on, but I didn\u2019t accept it. I\u2019m not putting on red. I\u2019m Maccabi Tel Aviv. All the world will see me in that moment. I can\u2019t do it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u2018What\u2019s going on? Are you crazy? You\u2019re going out.\u2019 I said: \u201cNo.I\u2019m not going out in red.\u2019 So, as you saw, I went out wearing green.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Now, Damari says she\u2019s focusing on the small things, like \u201cdrinking a cup of water, even saying \u2018Hello\u2019 and \u2018Good morning\u2019 to my mum\u201d because a future is hard to imagine.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2019Future\u2019 is a difficult word for me. As long as my friends are still hostage in Gaza, I can\u2019t really see my future.\u201d<\/p>\n
Israeli President Isaac Herzog was also at the UJIA event, and noted that Emily\u2019s story in particular touched him.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen Emily told me that during her terrible captivity she heard me speaking in an address to the nation and drew strength from my words, you touched me to the depths of my soul. How moving it is to see you here this evening,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
