{"id":52728,"date":"2025-09-23T08:42:39","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T12:42:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/which-are-the-150-countries-that-have-recognised-palestine-as-of-2025\/23\/09\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-09-23T08:42:39","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T12:42:39","slug":"which-are-the-150-countries-that-have-recognised-palestine-as-of-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/which-are-the-150-countries-that-have-recognised-palestine-as-of-2025\/23\/09\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Which are the 150+ countries that have recognised Palestine as of 2025?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-article-body=\"true\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">France, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Andorra and Belgium have formally recognised a Palestinian state at the 80th session of the General Assembly (UNGA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They join Canada, Australia and Portugal, as well as the <span>United Kingdom,<\/span> which announced its recognition on Sunday, as Israel pushes ahead with settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank and escalates its <span>genocide<\/span> in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The UK\u2019s decision to formally recognise a Palestinian state comes more than 100 years after the <span>Balfour Declaration<\/span> backed \u201cthe establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people\u201d and 77 years after the creation of Israel in the British Mandate of Palestine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIn the face of the growing horror in the Middle East, we are acting to keep alive the possibility of peace and of a two-state solution,\u201d UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a video statement Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The declarations by major Western powers \u2013 long considered close allies of Israel \u2013 underscore its growing international isolation amid a war on Gaza which has killed more than <span>65,000 Palestinians<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Which countries now recognise Palestine?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Currently, the State of Palestine is recognised as a sovereign nation by 157 of the 193 UN member states, representing 81 percent of the international community. Specifically, it would allow Palestinians to:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Open embassies with full diplomatic status<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Engage in trade agreements<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Gain support at international forums<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Approach the International Criminal Court (ICC)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Recognition will not:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\"\/>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Stop Israel\u2019s brutal military occupation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While recognition has little immediate effect on Israeli policy in the occupied territory, it does reflect a surge of international backing for Palestinian statehood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Martin Griffiths, director of Mediation Group International, told Al Jazeera the recognition of Palestine is only a first step.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis is the entry point, but it\u2019s not the end point,\u201d he said, urging countries such as the UK to uphold their obligations under the International Court of Justice by facilitating humanitarian aid, ending arms sales and easing blockades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He added that governments must also support reforms to make the Palestinian Authority \u201cfit for purpose\u201d, noting efforts by France, Saudi Arabia, Norway and Spain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt brings hope \u2026 but it doesn\u2019t necessarily bring a future yet,\u201d Griffiths said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Together with Mexico, these countries marked 11 new recognitions in 2025 and the 20th since Israel\u2019s war on Gaza began in October 2023, reflecting a growing wave of international recognition for Palestine.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Israel\u2019s reaction<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Israel\u2019s UN ambassador, Danny Danon, described the UN summit on Palestinian statehood as a \u201ccircus\u201d and said moves to recognise Palestine \u201creward terrorism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that message in his reaction to Sunday\u2019s recognition of Palestine by the UK, saying it was a \u201cprize\u201d for Hamas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He added that a Palestinian state \u201cwill not happen\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">A brief history of Palestinian recognition<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On November 15, 1988, during the first Intifada, Yasser Arafat, chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), declared the establishment of an independent State of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">More than 80 countries quickly extended recognition, largely from the Global South \u2013 including nations in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Arab world. Most European recognitions at the time came from states within the former Soviet bloc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On September 13, 1993, the Oslo Accords marked the first direct negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis, envisioning a Palestinian state alongside Israel. This means that Palestine cannot vote on resolutions, but it can attend meetings and participate in debates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Only the five permanent members of the UNSC \u2013 US, Russia, China, France and the UK \u2013 hold veto power. They gained this status in 1945 as the major victors of World War II. This allows any one of them to block a resolution, regardless of wider international support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On April 18, 2024, the US vetoed a widely supported resolution in the General Assembly that would have granted Palestine full UN membership, blocking the upgrade despite broad international backing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The US has a long history of vetoing UNSC resolutions critical of Israel, having done so at least 50 times since joining the UN.
