Engineers from Mazda have allegedly been dispatched to Toyota City while Toyota is evidently working to stretch the MX-5 platform into a 2+2 layout for the third-gen GR86. The rumor says both cars will use Mazda&#8217;s 990S chassis, but with different engines. First and foremost, Mazda and Toyota are already working together on some projects; for example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/reviews\/a62762509\/2025-mazda-cx50-hybrid-tested\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mazda CX-50 Hybrid;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Mazda CX-50 Hybrid<\/a> leverages a Toyota powertrain. And obviously, both brands have partnered with other companies in the past for these specific models: Toyota co-developed the GR 86 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/news\/a68058341\/2026-subaru-brz-more-expensive\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Subaru, which got the BRZ;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Subaru, which got the BRZ<\/a> out of the deal, and Mazda used the Miata to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/car-culture\/a30745\/fiat-124-spider-first-drive\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the Fiat 124 Spider;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the Fiat 124 Spider<\/a> (which, like this rumored deal, resulted in cars with different engines).<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Both Toyota and Mazda have an interest in future hybrid technologies, and this partnership could lead to the very first electrified MX-5 and GR86.
