However, the new travel rules only apply to Chinese nationals travelling to South Korea with pre-approved travel agencies, and passports remain <span>mandatory<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>&#8220;From September 29, when Chinese enter South Korea: No visa needed; no original passports needed; they do not need to reveal their accommodation address; even if they are carrying an infectious disease, this will only become known if they report it themselves,&#8221; re<\/span>ads Korean-language text in an image shared September 29 on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/269J-RWJL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Threads;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Threads<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"relative text-sm mt-1 pr-2.5\">\n<p><span>Screenshot of a Threads post captured September 30, 2025, with a red X added by AFP<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The post appeared the same day the South Korean government introduced a temporary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mojhome.moj.go.kr\/bbs\/immigration\/214\/597726\/artclView.do\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:visa-free scheme;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">visa-free scheme<\/a> for Chinese group tourists.\u00a0<span>The policy, which runs until June 30, 2026, allows groups of three or more people travelling on organised package tours to enter the country without applying for visas in advance (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250930061659\/https:\/\/mojhome.moj.go.kr\/bbs\/immigration\/214\/597726\/artclView.do\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Officials said the plan aims to boost tourism and support local businesses, particularly in areas such as Myeong-dong in Seoul, which has seen a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/lifestyle\/travel-food\/20250930\/chinese-tourists-flock-to-myeong-dong-as-visa-free-entry-begins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:surge;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">surge<\/a> in Chinese visitors since the scheme began (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250930062140\/https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/lifestyle\/travel-food\/20250930\/chinese-tourists-flock-to-myeong-dong-as-visa-free-entry-begins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But the announcement also fueled a wave of anti-Chinese sentiment online, with conspiracy theories warning of crime and disease spreading unchecked.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/v.daum.net\/v\/20250929135400055\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Demonstrations;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Demonstrations<\/a> against Chinese immigration have also taken place across the country (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250930063837\/https:\/\/v.daum.net\/v\/20250929135400055\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Identical claims spread on <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250930060114\/https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DPLTPj3gZXJ\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Instagram;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Instagram<\/a>, as well as on <span>South Korean<\/span> forums <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/97BJ-HL6U\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Nate Pann;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Nate Pann<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/897M-BJW5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ilbe;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Ilbe<\/a>. The posts portray the visa-free measure as a threat to public safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, the Justice Ministry told AFP the rumours are <span>false<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>Spokesperson<\/span> Hwang Gyu-taek on October 2 <span>said <\/span>the visa-free policy applies &#8220;only to Chinese tourists travelling in groups of three or more through travel agencies that have been pre-approved by the South Korean government.&#8221; Individual travellers remain subject to existing visa\u00a0<span>requirements, which need to be met in advance<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He added that &#8220;a valid passport is mandatory for all foreign arrivals regardless of visa status.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">All visitors must complete the <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-arrivalcard.go.kr\/portal\/main\/index.do\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:electronic arrival card;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">electronic arrival card<\/a><\/span>, which requires details such as accommodation, contact information and purpose of stay. Hwang noted that lists of incoming group tourists are screened in advance for high-risk\u00a0<span>individuals (<a href=\"http:\/\/perma.cc\/V5SB-UYQ7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">South Korea also maintains quarantine and health surveillance systems, with infectious diseases <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airport.kr\/ap_ko\/915\/subview.do\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:screened at airports;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">screened at airports<\/a> and mandatory reporting required for suspected cases. Entry is not dependent on voluntary self-reporting alone, Hwang said (<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/2TUE-MWHJ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Yu Min-yi, a senior researcher at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrtc.re.kr\/main\/main.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:IOM Migration Research and Training Centre;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">IOM Migration Research and Training Centre<\/a>, also told AFP that &#8220;all four of these claims are not true&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250930063926\/https:\/\/www.mrtc.re.kr\/main\/main.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;It is simply impossible to enter South Korea without a passport &#8212; not even the president could do that,&#8221; she said, adding that quarantine procedures are applied equally to all foreign arrivals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">She confirmed accommodation details must be declared as part of entry requirements.
