Pro-Palestinian statements were sprayed onto a state parliament in northern Germany overnight, as the world marks the second anniversary of the October 7 attacks on Israel, a police spokesman told dpa on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Some 15 slogans, including “From the River to the Sea,” “Free Gaza,” and “Free Greta [Thunberg]” were sprayed on the walls of the Schleswig-Holstein parliament in Kiel around midnight by unknown perpetrators, the spokesman said.<\/p>\n
The president of the parliament, Kristina Herbst, condemned the incident in the strongest possible terms.<\/p>\n
“Our parliament stands for open democratic dialogue – not for vandalism and political slogans on the walls,” she said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The graffiti does not merely affect the appearance of a democratic building; it also damages respect for the common rules of coexistence, Herbst argued.<\/p>\n
“Political issues must have their place in the public debate, not on the walls of parliament,” she added.<\/p>\n
Events are being held across Germany on Tuesday to mark the second anniversary of the Hamas-led October 7 attacks, which left 1,200 killed in Israel and saw 250 others taken to Gaza as hostages.<\/p>\n
More than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed in the ensuing conflict, according to figures from the Hamas-run health authority in Gaza that are seen as credible by the United Nations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
