Turkey<\/a> will host next year\u2019s UN<\/a> climate summit, while Australia<\/a> will take charge of leading the negotiations under an unusual compromise struck at the Cop30<\/a> talks in Brazil<\/a>.<\/p>\n The agreement ends a two-year stand-off between the two countries, both of which had bid to host Cop31. It means the conference, scheduled for late 2026, will be held in the resort city of Antalya<\/a>, with Australia<\/a>\u2019s climate minister Chris Bowen presiding over the negotiations.<\/p>\n Mr Bowen confirmed the arrangement on the sidelines of the Cop30 summit in Bel\u00e9m, saying he would hold the full powers of a COP president, including appointing co-facilitators, preparing draft texts and issuing the summit\u2019s final decision.<\/p>\n \u201cIt would be great if Australia could have it all, but we can\u2019t have it all,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was important to strike an agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese<\/a> described the compromise as \u201ca big win for both Australia and Turkey<\/a>\u201d, adding that the deal would allow Canberra to focus attention on Pacific<\/a> island nations most at risk from climate change.<\/p>\n Australia had pitched its bid as a \u201cPacific COP\u201d, designed to amplify the concerns of low-lying island states and climate-vulnerable communities. It has already spent about A$7m (\u00a33.6m) preparing for the event.<\/p>\n
