Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara<\/a> formally notified Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday that the government is now legally obligated to take concrete enforcement measures against draft evaders, following last week\u2019s landmark High Court of Justice ruling on Israel\u2019s conscription law.<\/p>\n In the Tuesday letter, the attorney-general underscored that the ruling imposes a binding duty on the government to act \u201cswiftly and effectively\u201d to enforce legal measures against individuals defined as draft evaders, particularly within the ultra-Orthodox (haredi) sector.<\/p>\n Baharav-Miara said, \u201cFollowing the draft ruling, the government is obliged to act againstdraft evaders<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Five days earlier, on Thursday, the court issued a final, absolute order requiring the government to devise and implement an enforcement policy within 45 days. The ruling mandates a dual mechanism of criminal enforcement and civil-economic sanctions, such as the removal of state benefits or subsidies from individuals avoiding compulsory service.<\/p>\n According to the judgment, the state\u2019s conduct in recent years amounted to a near-complete abandonment of its duty to enforce the law.<\/p>\n
