The clip in fact surfaced a month before the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, and police in Dhaka told AFP the man seen in the video is in fact a student at a nearby college who was later let go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The last video of Dipu Chandra Das before his death, surrounded by Bangladeshi policemen,&#8221; reads part of an <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/NK9F-E5Z8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:X post;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">X post<\/a> shared on December 22, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The post shares a video of a group of police officers dragging a man through a crowd. Hindi-language text overlaid on the video repeats the claim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The video also includes two pictures of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20251220-tens-of-thousands-attend-funeral-of-killed-bangladesh-student-leader\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dipu Chandra Das;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Dipu Chandra Das<\/a>, a Hindu garment factory worker who was killed following allegations of blasphemy in Mymensingh, north of the capital Dhaka, on December 18 (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20251230031220\/https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20251220-tens-of-thousands-attend-funeral-of-killed-bangladesh-student-leader\" rel=\"nofollow Bangladesh, Das&#8217;s killing coincided with a spate of violence triggered by the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a key student leader in the pro-democracy uprising in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Bangladesh&#8217;s Rapid Action Battalion said there was no evidence of blasphemy in the case and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsonair.gov.in\/no-evidence-of-blasphemy-in-mymensingh-lynching-says-bangladesh-rab\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" break-words\">The incident also triggered protests in neighbouring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/explainers\/from-kolkata-to-delhi-how-hindu-mans-lynching-in-bangladesh-has-fired-up-indians-13962285.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:India;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">India<\/a>, where officials have demanded the protection of all minorities in Bangladesh (<a break-words\">Posts sharing the purported video of Das&#8217;s last moments also appeared on <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/7A6L-MZSJ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Facebook;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Facebook<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/5AWX-UWRZ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Instagram;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Instagram<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/perma.cc\/FR4Y-UA3J\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Threads;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Threads<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/Q6F3-YSU2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:X;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But the deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Masud Alam told AFP on December 28 the man in the video is not Das.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;My fellow police officers caught him sensing a protester. But we freed him after learning he was a student of nearby Dhaka College,&#8221; Alam said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=linGPlWGcDw&amp;ab_channel=AFPNewsAgency\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reverse image search;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reverse image search<\/a> on Google using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pKskDgeuQw4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:keyframes;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">keyframes<\/a> from the falsely shared video found the same video had surfaced in news reports a month before Das was killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Bangladeshi media outlet Bhorer Kagoj published the video on its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/QVJ2-FAQN\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Facebook;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HkwQUrohMco\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:YouTube;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">YouTube<\/a> pages on November 18, 2025 with a Bengali-language title that reads, &#8220;What happened to this Dhaka College student?&#8221;\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/7RQQ-PCZA\" rel=\"nofollow News, shared a longer version of the footage on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1587543338917266\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Facebook;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Facebook<\/a> page, which shows the man repeatedly saying he is a Dhaka College student and not involved in the protests\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/2AY8-TXEL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">At one point, he identifies himself as Abdul Momin, while the jersey he is wearing bears the logo of Dhaka College on the front and \">report<\/a> by the Prothom Alo news site on November 17, which stated police clashed with protesters who went to demolish what remains of the residence of Bangladesh&#8217;s founding father Sheikh Mujibir Rahman (<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/KNK2-2F3S\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The protests followed the verdict in the case against his daughter and ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over crimes
