Iranian protesters set fire on Wednesday evening to a building in Asadabad, in the Hamadan province of western Iran, footage circulated on social media by Iranian independent journalists and media outlets showed as protests intensified across the country.<\/p>\n
Unverified reports claimed the targeted building to be a base of the Basij paramilitary forces, though this claim could not be independently verified.<\/p>\n
Iranian semi-state-owned media outlet, ISNA, reported that a Basij officer was killed during the protests.<\/p>\n
Iran International reported local security forces opened fire and deployed tear gas in attempt to disperse the protests in Asadabad. It further reported that demonstrators “remained in the streets.”<\/p>\n

Earlier on Wednesday, Iranian protesters tried to break into a local government building in the southern Fars province. Protests over high inflation and a slump in the value of the local rial currency began among shopkeepers in Tehran on Sunday and by Tuesday had spread to several universities in Tehran, with the reported break-in attempt on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
