Germany is preparing for a day of icy surfaces and chaotic mobility on Monday caused by fresh snow and freezing rain, in the latest harsh conditions during days of sub-zero temperatures.<\/p>\n
The German Weather Service (DWD) is forecasting a “severe black ice situation nationwide,” with the latest forecasts on Sunday suggesting that a low pressure system from the west would bring snow and then freezing rain causing slippery surfaces.<\/p>\n
Heavy snowfall on Friday had prompted Germany’s Deutsche Bahn to close multiple long-distance train routes, but the rail service says it currently anticipates only minor restrictions on Monday from freezing rain.<\/p>\n
Problems like those witnessed on Friday and Saturday are not expected, said Philipp Nagl, head of DB InfraGo, the rail company responsible for infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Things look different for car drivers and cyclists, however, with Germany’s ADAC, Europe’s largest automobile association, advising people to avoid unnecessary journeys amid the risk of black ice.<\/p>\n
In North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state, schools are closing and switching to online lessons on Monday to avoid the risk of accidents during school runs.<\/p>\n
