{"id":56203,"date":"2026-01-26T17:59:05","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T22:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/military-intervention-may-be-unavoidable-to-change-iran-leadership-mep-says\/26\/01\/2026\/"},"modified":"2026-01-26T17:59:05","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T22:59:05","slug":"military-intervention-may-be-unavoidable-to-change-iran-leadership-mep-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/military-intervention-may-be-unavoidable-to-change-iran-leadership-mep-says\/26\/01\/2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Military intervention may be unavoidable to change Iran leadership, MEP says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-article-body=\"true\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">PM Sebastian Tynkkynen told The Post that military intervention may be the final step needed to achieve regime change in Iran after sanctions and diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Military intervention is the final step in ensuring a change of leadership in Iran, a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/european-parliament-condemns-iran-brutal-150607875.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:European Parliament;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">European Parliament<\/a>, Sebastian Tynkkynen, told <em>The Jerusalem Post<\/em> on Monday, adding that diplomatic actions must first pave the way for a weakened Tehran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Tynkkynen, the chief negotiator on the Iran resolution for the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, spoke with the Post shortly after finishing discussions with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/international\/article-884353\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:NATO;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">NATO<\/a> Secretary-General Mark Rutte on forming a coalition of NATO countries willing to participate in a military intervention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cNATO has two main enemies. (credit: ATTA KENARE \/ AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">End to executions<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The European Parliament voted on Thursday in favor of a resolution calling on the Iranian regime to end executions and release detainees, and for the European Council to consider designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). That resolution was adopted by 562 votes in favor, nine against, and 57 abstentions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Questioned about the concerns voiced by Belgian MEP Marc Botenga in the European Parliament last week, suggesting that sanctions directly harm the Iranian people and empower the regime, Tynkkynen shared that the Iranian people called for sanctions on the regime leaders regardless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis is what the Iranian people are demanding. They are fully aware that if we put harder sanctions on Iran, that would mean harsher conditions for the Iranian people in their country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cActually, the concrete reasons for these protests were poor living conditions, the country\u2019s economic situation, and so on, which enabled people to take to the streets. They had a concrete reason for what to demand, and then the protests got bigger and bigger,\u201d Tynkkynen continued.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">Harder times ahead<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThey want to tear down this regime that is not for the people,\u201d he went on to say. \u201cIranian people know that harder times will come if we put more sanctions; they still want them because that\u2019s one of the keys for the regime to collapse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The official shared that Iranian civilians frequently contacted him to make clear they are willing to sacrifice their own lives to ensure an end to the repressive reign enforced by Supreme Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/state-orchestrated-massacre-khamenei-issued-172955000.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ayatollah Ali Khamenei;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ayatollah Ali Khamenei<\/a>, leaving comments on his social media accounts and continuing to protest despite the great personal risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">With some Iranian officials telling international media that the death toll inflicted by Tehran has reached tens of thousands, Tynkkynen made clear that the situation was heading toward a breaking point. \u201cClearly, if the state is doing anything like this to its citizens, the leadership is not legitimate, and a change must be achieved,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt has to be achieved, the change for the leadership, because this leadership is not legitimate,\u201d Tynkkynen asserted. \u201c[There is] intentional state violence against their own people.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">The 12 Day War<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Speaking on the 12-day war in June, which saw Israel and the US attack Iran\u2019s nuclear infrastructure and personnel, he said, \u201cI\u2019m really, really grateful that Israel and the US did their responsibility. [With] military interventions, they have weakened the position of this Islamic dictatorship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meanwhile, both members of the European Parliament and members of the United Nations Human Rights Council took the opportunity to discuss Iran\u2019s human rights violations last week as a platform to condemn those military actions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On social media, Tynkkynen claimed that the IRGC had infiltrated the European Parliament. As chief negotiator for ECR, he said he had been privy to some behind-the-scenes discussions, uncovering \u201cworrying\u201d recommendations from the Left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhen we all know what the consequences of their suggestions [would be], I cannot call it naivety anymore&#8230; It must be what they are intentionally suggesting&#8230; what they\u2019re suggesting is totally the wishes that the IRGC and the regime leadership,\u201d he remarked, saying there were those in the European Parliament who wanted to see sanctions against the regime ease and condemnation of the military actions taken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Tynkkynen disclosed what he said were the Left\u2019s suggested amendments to the Thursday resolution and what they are \u201csuggesting against the Iranian people\u201d in a post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Explaining the seeming lack of concern for Iranians among Western leftists, Tynkkynen expressed that for many, condemnations and protests are used as \u201cvirtual signaling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThey want to be seen in the light of: \u2018they are good people,\u2019 and then if the hegemony in the Western media, for example, would be against Israel, so then they have to be part of that hegemony,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIf they were really committed to supporting human rights, they would talk about Sudan. They would talk about Iran.
