The UKMTO received the initial report at 22:40 UTC on 4 March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Separately, <em>Reuters<\/em> cited Sonangol Marine Services in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/crude-tanker-sonangol-namibes-hull-likely-breached-after-blast-near-iraq-port-2026-03-05\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reporting an incident;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reporting an incident<\/a> involving the Bahamas-flagged crude oil tanker <em>Sonangol Namibe<\/em> near Iraq\u2019s Khor al Zubair port.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">An unidentified small boat approached the vessel at 01:20 local time on 5 March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sonangol Marine Services said: \u201cThe small boat approached the port side of the tanker and a short time later a loud bang was heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The company reported that the crew noticed a port ballast tank was losing water, suggesting a possible breach in the hull but confirmed the vessel remains stable and afloat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The vessel was not carrying cargo and there were no reports of pollution. The <em>Sonangol Namibe<\/em> was under contract with Iraq\u2019s state oil marketer, SOMO, and planned to load 80,000t of Iraqi fuel, <em>Reuters <\/em>reported, citing sources in Iraq\u2019s energy sector and shipping industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In another regional development, Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guard announced it had struck a US tanker in the northern Gulf and claimed the ship was on fire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Earlier in the week, debris from an intercepted drone caused a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offshore-technology.com\/news\/fire-erupts-at-fujairah-oil-hub\/?cf-view\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:fire at the Fujairah oil trading hub;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">fire at the Fujairah oil trading hub<\/a> in the United Arab Emirates, contributing to ongoing disruptions affecting energy facilities across the Middle East.
