His Easter message came amid new Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon and President Trump\u2019s threatening to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/04\/world\/middleeast\/iran-israel-us-war-middle-east.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">rain down \u201chell\u201d<\/a> on Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Under a sunny sky in Vatican City, thousands celebrated Easter Mass and listened to the traditional <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/en\/messages\/urbi\/documents\/20260405-urbi-et-orbi-pasqua.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cUrbi et Orbi,\u201d<\/a> or \u201cTo the City and the World,\u201d message, a compendium of the Vatican\u2019s global concerns and the pope\u2019s priorities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cLet those who have weapons lay them down. Let those who have the power to unleash wars choose peace,\u201d Leo said in the message. \u201cNot a peace imposed by force, but through dialogue. Not with the desire to dominate others, but to encounter them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Cheers and applause rose from the crowd, and thousands of cellphones shot up simultaneously when Leo appeared on the balcony of St. Peter\u2019s Basilica, where he <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/08\/world\/europe\/pope-leo-xiv-robert-francis-prevost.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">first stood last May<\/a> after he was elected pope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">His predecessor, Pope Francis, had died a few weeks earlier, the day after Easter. One of Francis\u2019 last acts had been to preside over <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/20\/world\/europe\/pope-francis-easter.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Easter Mass<\/a> in St. Peter\u2019s Square, ignoring his doctors\u2019 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/22\/world\/europe\/francis-pope-church-health.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">orders to slow down<\/a> less than a month after he had been discharged from a lengthy hospital stay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In his own message, Leo borrowed an expression from Pope Francis, citing the increasing \u201cglobalization of indifference.\u201d Leo made that plea his own, saying, \u201cWe are growing accustomed to violence, resigning ourselves to it, and becoming indifferent.\u201d Leo, who tends to avoid direct criticism of nations or leaders, did not name specific conflicts. The Urbi et Orbi messages that popes deliver twice a year, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/25\/world\/asia\/leo-christmas-first-speech-pope.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">at Christmas<\/a> and at Easter, often include calls for peace, singling out active global conflicts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The Rev. Gonzalo de la Morena, a Spanish priest who was among those in St. Peter\u2019s Square on Sunday, said he had been touched by the pope\u2019s words. \u201cHe made me reflect, also at a personal and social level, that peace and love require sacrifices, but they are worth it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">After 12 years of Francis\u2019 outspoken papacy, Leo has until now opted for a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/03\/world\/europe\/pope-leo-first-trip-francis-turkey-lebanon.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">more deliberate public stance<\/a>. The war in Iran has led him to be more forthright, particularly after Pete Hegseth, the U.S. defense secretary, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/20\/us\/politics\/hegseth-christianity-military.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">asked Americans to pray<\/a> \u201cevery day, on bended knee\u201d for a military victory in the Middle East \u201cin the name of Jesus Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Pope Leo has not referred specifically to Mr. Hesgeth, but during his Palm Sunday homily a week ago, Leo said that God rejects the prayers of \u201cthose who wage war,\u201d and that their \u201chands are full of blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/cfb6GyoXknc\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">speaking to reporters<\/a> outside the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo, near Rome, Leo said he hoped Mr. Trump was \u201clooking for an off-ramp\u201d to end the war. \u201cHopefully, he is looking for a way to decrease the amount of violence, of bombing, which would be a significant contribution to removing the hatred that\u2019s being created and it\u2019s increasing constantly in the Middle East and elsewhere,\u201d the pope said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">And in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/en\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2026\/04\/02\/260402a.html?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">homily<\/a> during a Mass on Thursday morning, Leo said that the Christian mission had often been \u201cdistorted by a desire for domination, entirely foreign to the way of Jesus Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">On Sunday, he reiterated that \u201cthe power with which Christ rose is entirely nonviolent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Leo added that the \u201ctrue strength that brings peace to humanity\u201d fostered \u201crespectful relationships at every level: among individuals, families, social groups, and nations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cWe cannot continue to be indifferent,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we cannot resign ourselves to evil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Eddie and June Graham, who traveled to Rome from Glasgow with their children for Easter, said that while they did not speak fluent Italian, they had understood Leo\u2019s pleas against indifference. \u201cWe as humans need to create a critical mass in opposition to violence and war,\u201d Mr. Graham said. \u201cIt\u2019s the indifferent middle that actually make all the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Leo, who leaves for a 10-day trip to Africa on April 13, announced that next Saturday he would celebrate a prayer vigil for peace in St. Peter\u2019s Basilica.<\/p>\n<p
