It lived during the Early Jurassic epoch, between 201 and 174 million years ago, which was <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/archaeology\/jurassic-fossil-bird-baminornis-zhenghensis-b2698322.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:a pivotal evolutionary period;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a pivotal evolutionary period<\/a> witnessing the rise and diversification of long-necked, plant-eating dinosaurs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The genus name is an amalgamation of <em>Xiangyun,<\/em> the county where the specimen was found, and <em>loong<\/em> for the traditional \u201c<a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/archaeology\/dinocephalosaurus-orientalis-fossils-dragon-fish-b2500732.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Chinese dragon;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Chinese dragon<\/a>\u201d. The species name,<em> fengming,<\/em> meaning phoenix singing, is a reminder that <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/bird-dinosaur-evolution-t-rex-asteroid-b2967973.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:birds are living dinosaurs;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">birds are living dinosaurs<\/a>. It also echoes <em>Luming<\/em>, the town the fossil was found in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAdditionally, Fengming was the original name of Lin Fengmian, the artistic master and founding president of the China Academy of Art, whose staff participated extensively in this project,\u201d the researchers wrote in a study published in the journal <em>Royal Society Open Science<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><button aria-label=\"View larger image\" class=\"group absolute bottom-0 size-full\" of cervical, pelvic, vertebral, and hip bones found at a fossil site in the Fengjiahe Formation in southwestern China\u2019s Yunnan province.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They noticed that <em>Xiangyunloong<\/em> was distinguished from fellow long-necked sauropod dinosaurs by a unique combination of features. <em>\u201cXiangyunloong<\/em> exhibits significant morphological distinctions from <em>Xingxiulong<\/em> and other early-diverging sauropodomorphs, supporting its designation as a new genus,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It had a larger body size, a shorter neck, and an elongated tail compared to similar dinosaurs, indicating an initial stage of gigantism characteristic of such species, as well as the potential ability to walk on two legs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">These features, according to the researchers, could represent an alternative evolutionary pathway to the neck elongation seen in many of its relatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt provides further evidence for the diverse adaptive strategies employed by these dinosaurs prior to the dominance of the long-necked, gigantic sauropods,\u201d they argued. \u201cThe discovery of <em>Xiangyunloong<\/em> significantly enriches the morphological and ecological diversity of early-diverging sauropodomorphs in southwestern China.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a
