Peru\u2019s election authority on Friday finally announced the official results of last month\u2019s presidential vote, confirming a run-off between conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori and left-wing contender Roberto S\u00e1nchez.<\/p>\n
The two will face each other in a second round on June 7 following the slow counting of all ballots.<\/p>\n
Fujimori, the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, who was convicted of human rights violations, came first with 17% of the vote. She represents the conservative Popular Force party and is running for the presidency for the fourth time.<\/p>\n
S\u00e1nchez, a former minister under jailed ex-president Pedro Castillo, secured 12% and is the candidate of the Together for Peru party.<\/p>\n
Far-right former Lima mayor Rafael L\u00f3pez Aliaga narrowly missed the run-off with 11.9% of the vote.<\/p>\n
A total of 35 candidates competed in the first round of the highly fragmented election in April.<\/p>\n
Peru\u2019s political situation is highly unstable, marked by ongoing tensions between parliament and the government. The last president to complete a full five-year term was Ollanta Humala, who governed from 2011 to 2016.<\/p>\n
The current president, Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Balc\u00e1zar, is already the country\u2019s eighth head of state in the past decade.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
