(credit: NICOLAS TUCAT \/ AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">First time Croatian president has withheld approval<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The office said that granting or withholding approval for proposed ambassadors is a sovereign right of the Republic of Croatia, and that the decision is made by the president of the Republic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAny public or political pressure, in this case from the Israeli side, will not change the president\u2019s decision,\u201d the office said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This marks the first time in Croatian history that a Croatian president has withheld approval of an ambassador\u2019s appointment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Israel\u2019s current ambassador to Croatia, Gary Koren, is concluding his term at the end of May and returning to Israel.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">Accused of &#8216;unacceptable, hate-filled language&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Israel\u2019s Foreign Ministry told <em>The Jerusalem Post<\/em> on Monday that it is working with the Croatian Foreign Ministry and the Croatian government to resolve the issue of the status of Israel\u2019s next ambassador in Zagreb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Croatian president has been accused of making anti-Israel and antisemitic statements in the past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In October 2025, Milanovic refused to meet with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/embassies-jerusalem-govt-approves-proposal-205007782.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar&quot;}\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar<\/a> during Sa&#8217;ar&#8217;s official visit to Zagreb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He said that Sa\u2019ar\u2019s visit was unacceptable while Israel\u2019s \u201cgenocide against the people of Gaza\u201d continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIf I had met with someone from that government, it would mean accepting Israel\u2019s violence, ethnic cleansing, and war crimes,\u201d Milanovic said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Then, in March 2026, Sa\u2019ar accused Milanovic of \u201cunacceptable\u201d and \u201chate-filled language\u201d after the Croatian president said, \u201cWe don\u2019t want other people\u2019s infections and germs in Croatia, neither Israeli nor Iranian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sa\u2019ar wrote on X\/Twitter: \u201cThe Croatian president\u2019s offensive rhetoric is unacceptable. Following the meeting, Sa\u2019ar said, \u201cGreat meeting my friend Croatia\u2019s FM Gordan Grlic-Radman during our visits to Berlin.
