Traffic across the Brenner Pass, a key Alpine route linking Austria and Italy, remained unexpectedly light on Saturday morning ahead of a full-day closure linked to a protest against heavy transit traffic in the region.<\/p>\n
Demonstrators plan to protest on the Austrian side of the Brenner corridor at midday against the growing amount of traffic in the region.<\/p>\n
Police and motoring organizations on both sides of the border had expected heavy congestion as travellers attempted to cross before restrictions took effect.<\/p>\n
On the Austrian side of the border, cars and motorcycles are barred from using the route between 11 am (0900GMT) and 7 pm. On the Italian side, restrictions are in force from 10:30 am until 8 pm.<\/p>\n
However, traffic flowed smoothly through Saturday morning with no major delays reported in Austria, Germany or northern Italy.<\/p>\n
Authorities had strongly urged people to avoid making unnecessary journeys on the route.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s quieter than usual at the moment,\u201d said a spokesman for Austria\u2019s \u00d6AMTC motoring club, noting that holiday weekends typically bring heavy return traffic through the Tyrol region.<\/p>\n
Germany\u2019s ADAC motoring association also reported no significant congestion, while police in southern Bavaria said conditions remained stable.<\/p>\n
On the Italian side, traffic police in Bolzano described conditions as \u201cextremely quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n
Officials said advance warnings appeared to have reduced the number of motorists travelling at peak times, with many either leaving earlier or postponing journeys.<\/p>\n
During the closure, only local traffic is permitted in the affected area, and alternative routes are also restricted.<\/p>\n
Authorities expect traffic volumes to remain elevated in the days following the reopening of the route and have warned motorists to prepare for delays.<\/p>\n
