France has imposed temporary alcohol restrictions at public events as a severe heatwave pushes temperatures toward record levels across much of Europe.<\/p>\n
French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced the measure following a government crisis meeting, banning alcohol consumption at the annual F\u00eate de la Musique celebrations and other public events in 35 regions placed under the country\u2019s highest-level red heat alert.<\/p>\n
The restrictions come as temperatures were expected to reach 39 to 40 degrees Celsius (102 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit) across large parts of France on Sunday, with some areas potentially hitting 41C (106F), according to Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n The alcohol ban is part of a broader effort to reduce health risks as extreme heat settles over Western Europe. Health officials have long warned that alcohol can contribute to dehydration and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses during periods of intense heat.<\/p>\n The affected regions stretch from southwestern France through the Paris area and into Burgundy, encompassing millions of residents and visitors. While alcohol consumption will be restricted at designated public events, authorities in Paris have ordered parks to remain open around the clock to provide residents with additional outdoor spaces during the heatwave.<\/p>\n France is not alone in responding to the extreme weather. Germany issued heat alerts across most of the country as temperatures approached 38C (100F), while weather officials warned that a combination of heat and humidity could trigger severe thunderstorms.<\/p>\n In Spain, authorities closed a World Cup fan zone in Madrid ahead of the country\u2019s match against Saudi Arabia, citing the extreme conditions.
