Brazil is importing Chinese-made cars at a record pace, but the larger story may be what the country wants in return. <\/p>\n
According to The Auto Wire<\/a>, in the first five months of 2026, Brazil bought $5.2 billion worth of Chinese vehicles. The wave of purchases was enough to move it past Russia as China’s biggest overseas car market.\u00a0 <\/p>\n Much of that growth came from battery-electric and hybrid vehicles. According to The Auto Wire’s Shawn Henry, the accelerated purchases came as Brazil increased duties on imported EVs and hybrids to 35% from 25-30%.\u00a0 <\/p>\n For years, as Henry reported, Brazil has indicated that foreign automakers looking to sell vehicles in large volumes should also make them in-country with Brazilian labor and supply chains. <\/p>\n The new tariffs show how much purchasing power the Brazilian car market has while also putting pressure on Chinese EV makers BYD, Chery, and Great Wall to manufacture their vehicles in the country.\u00a0 <\/p>\n According to The Auto Wire, Chinese automakers are already putting pressure on legacy car companies in Brazil, and that competition appears to be driving prices down for drivers. <\/p>\n Brazil’s average new-car transaction price was down 3.5% from a year earlier in June, the outlet reported, the first annual drop since 2020. BYD’s Dolphin Mini ranked as Brazil’s best-selling passenger vehicle in February, not merely the leading EV. Chinese brands’ slice of Brazil’s new-energy-vehicle market climbed to 18% in June after more than doubling over the prior year. <\/p>\n While Chinese EVs can be compelling to Brazilian drivers, offering low upfront costs and an alternative to fluctuating gas prices, the new tariffs suggest that, in order to continue seeing success in its market, Chinese manufacturers need to build more of their cars in Brazil.\u00a0 <\/p>\n Brazil is using tariffs and quotas to steer automaker behavior, according to The Auto Wire. By charging more on finished imports, the outlet reported, it is trying to pull investment into factories, supplier networks, and local payrolls instead of relying on kits shipped to Brazil that can be easily assembled without relying heavily on the country’s resources or workforce. <\/p>\n In other words, according to The Auto Wire, Brazil appears to be aiming for more than cheaper EVs alone.
