Russia’s Supreme Court will on Monday once again hear the case concerning the exclusion of the Yabloko liberal opposition party from parliamentary elections in September.<\/p>\n
The anti-war party has lodged an appeal against the court’s decision, handed down a week ago, to exclude it from the Duma election.<\/p>\n
Observers expect the Kremlin-controlled court to uphold its decision in Monday’s appeal hearing.<\/p>\n
The court had upheld a complaint by the ultra-nationalist Rodina party, which is loyal to the Kremlin, and which had accused Yabloko of breaching Russia’s electoral laws.<\/p>\n
At almost the same time, the Pskov City Court is due to announce its verdict against the party’s deputy leader, Lev Shlosberg.<\/p>\n
In a controversial trial, the public prosecutor’s office has sought a sentence of twelve years and one month in a penal colony for the prominent Russian anti-war activist and opposition figure. Shlosberg is charged with allegedly denigrating the Russian armed forces.<\/p>\n
Yabloko advocates a ceasefire in the Russian war of aggression that has been ongoing for four and a half years. Parties loyal to the Kremlin criticize Yabloko members as traitors and agents of the West.<\/p>\n
Opposition figures have repeatedly been branded extremists. Commentators suspect that the government aims to have the party dissolved.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
