The German Defence Ministry confirmed on Friday that it is aware of cases of Ukrainian soldiers who have deserted whilst undergoing training in Germany.<\/p>\n
“The Federal Ministry of Defence is aware that, in isolated cases, members of the Ukrainian armed forces have left while undergoing training in Germany,” a spokeswoman for the German military’s Special Training Command in Strausberg near Berlin said in response to an enquiry.<\/p>\n
The Bundeswehr – Germany’s armed forces – plays no role in identifying Ukrainian deserters. The spokeswoman referred to this as “internal matters of the Ukrainian armed forces” and directed enquiries to relevant authorities within the Ukrainian administration.<\/p>\n
This follows a report in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit which claimed several hundred Ukrainian soldiers who were in Germany for training have deserted.<\/p>\n
The Bundeswehr says that by early 2026, 22 participating nations had trained around 87,000 Ukrainian soldiers as part of an EU mission.<\/p>\n
As one of the key contributors, Germany has so far trained around 29,000 soldiers in areas including military leadership, combat, weapons training, maintenance, repair and logistics, medical services, as well as mine defence and Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) protection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
