Candidates pledged wholehearted support for Israel\u2019s military response following last month\u2019s Hamas attacks, and clashed over Ukraine, China and immigration.<\/p>\n<p>The debate, minus <span class=\"caas-xray-inline caas-xray-entity caas-xray-pill rapid-nonanchor-lt\" data-entity-id=\"Donald_Trump\" data-ylk=\"cid:Donald_Trump;pos:1;elmt:wiki;sec:pill-inline-entity;elm:pill-inline-text;itc:1;cat:Politician;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/search.yahoo.com\/search?p=Donald%20Trump\" data-ylk=\"slk:Donald Trump;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Donald Trump<\/a><\/span>, the runaway favorite for the party\u2019s 2024 nomination who was hosting his own private rally elsewhere in the area, was a more bitter affair than its predecessors in Wisconsin and California. Lively verbal sparring sometimes regressed into insults, with <span class=\"caas-xray-inline caas-xray-entity caas-xray-pill rapid-nonanchor-lt\" data-entity-id=\"Nikki_Haley\" data-ylk=\"cid:Nikki_Haley;pos:2;elmt:wiki;sec:pill-inline-entity;elm:pill-inline-text;itc:1;cat:OfficeHolder;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/search.yahoo.com\/search?p=Nikki%20Haley\" data-ylk=\"slk:Nikki Haley;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Nikki Haley<\/a><\/span> at one point calling one of her rivals \u201cscum\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The candidates also grappled over immigration, the devastatingly bad night for Republicans in Tuesday\u2019s elections, and the party\u2019s staunchly anti-abortion stance on abortion that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/nov\/08\/abortion-winning-issue-rights-victories-2024-election\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:analysts say was the reason;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">analysts say was the reason<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span>Related: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/nov\/05\/us-presidential-election-biden-trump-polls\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:With the US election a year away, most Americans don\u2019t want Biden or Trump;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">With the US election a year away, most Americans don\u2019t want Biden or Trump<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Discussion over Israel\u2019s actions in Gaza were, however, most prominent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will be telling Bibi [Israel\u2019s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu] to finish the job once and for all with these butchers Hamas. They\u2019re terrorists. They\u2019re massacring innocent people. They would wipe every Jew off the globe if they could,\u201d <span class=\"caas-xray-inline caas-xray-entity caas-xray-pill rapid-nonanchor-lt\" data-entity-id=\"Ron_DeSantis\" data-ylk=\"cid:Ron_DeSantis;pos:3;elmt:wiki;sec:pill-inline-entity;elm:pill-inline-text;itc:1;cat:OfficeHolder;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/search.yahoo.com\/search?p=Ron%20DeSantis\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ron DeSantis;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ron DeSantis<\/a><\/span>, the Florida governor, said.<\/p>\n<p>Haley, a former ambassador to the United Nations, was equally forthright. \u201cThe first thing I said to him when it happened was, \u2018finish them\u2019. They have to eliminate Hamas, [we have to] support Israel with whatever they need whenever they need it, and three, make sure we bring our hostages home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis took credit for chartering flights to rescue stranded Americans in Israel, but overreached by claiming \u201cthere could have been more hostages, if we hadn\u2019t acted\u201d. The DeSantis flights, which some have criticized as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/nov\/03\/ron-desantis-israel-hamas-foreign-policy-florida\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:de facto foreign policy,;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">de facto foreign policy,<\/a> took place after Hamas took about 240 hostages on 7 October.<\/p>\n<p>Haley and entrepreneur <span class=\"caas-xray-inline caas-xray-entity caas-xray-pill rapid-nonanchor-lt\" data-entity-id=\"Vivek_Ramaswamy\" data-ylk=\"cid:Vivek_Ramaswamy;pos:4;elmt:wiki;sec:pill-inline-entity;elm:pill-inline-text;itc:1;cat:BusinessPerson;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/search.yahoo.com\/search?p=Vivek%20Ramaswamy\" data-ylk=\"slk:Vivek Ramaswamy;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Vivek Ramaswamy<\/a><\/span>, who has been criticized for <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4214596-ramaswamy-sparks-furor-with-comments-on-race\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:controversial racial comments;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">controversial racial comments<\/a>, took potshots at each other. Haley\u2019s policies, Ramaswamy said, fueled war, and in a reference to a former vice-president called her \u201cDick Cheney in three-inch heels\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wear five-inch heels, and don\u2019t wear them unless you can run on them,\u201d she shot straight back. \u201cI wear heels not for a fashion statement \u2013 they\u2019re for ammunition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A further unpleasant exchange between the two came in a discussion about the Chinese social media platform TikTok. \u201cIn the last debate, she made fun of me for actually joining TikTok while her own daughter was actually using the app for a long time, so you might want to take care of your family first,\u201d Ramaswamy sniped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave my daughter out of your mouth,\u201d Haley interjected. \u201cYou are just scum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Haley performed well in the first two debates, and has enjoyed a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/nov\/04\/nikki-haley-republican-presidential-primary-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:surge in popularity;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">surge in popularity<\/a>. She had painted DeSantis as an isolationist at a time when, she said, the US needed to work with global partners, and their feud continued Wednesday with bickering over China, each accusing the other of operating policies favorable to one of America\u2019s foes.<\/p>\n<p>But the pair were united in tearing strategically into the absent the former president, who they trail by a significant margin in the race for the nomination. Trump, DeSantis said, \u201cowes it to you to be on this stage\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Republicans were gonna get tired of winning. Well, we saw it last night: I\u2019m sick of Republicans losing,\u201d DeSantis said, referring to Tuesday\u2019s Democratic electoral successes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/nov\/08\/us-elections-2023-abortion-rights-virginia-kentucky\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Kentucky and Virginia;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">Kentucky and Virginia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Haley said: \u201cI think he was the right president at the right time. I don\u2019t think he\u2019s the right president now. I think that he put us a trillion dollars in debt and our kids are never gonna forgive us for that. He warned that \u201cterrorist cells\u201d were entering the country from Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said: \u201cThe American people are frustrated that they do not have a president who reminds us and tells us where\u2019s the accountability. Where are those dollars? How are those dollars being spent? We need those answers for us to continue to see the support for Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joe Biden has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/oct\/20\/biden-israel-ukraine-gaza-aid-request-congress\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:asked Congress for $106bn;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">asked Congress for $106bn<\/a> for Ukraine and Israel aid.<\/p>\n<p>Scott said he wanted to see the southern US border closed to immigrants, Ramaswamy said he would build a wall there and at the northern border with Canada, while DeSantis repeated his previous promise to send troops to the border and shoot drug smugglers \u201cstone-cold dead\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Christie, the former New Jersey governor, spoke of a need to deter China from invading Taiwan as the debate moved to other foreign policy topics. \u201cWe need to go straight to our nuclear submarine program, and we need to increase it drastically,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Christie weighed in on the TikTok debate, saying the platform was \u201cnot only spyware \u2013 it is polluting the minds of American young people all throughout this country, and they\u2019re doing it intentionally\u201d. As president, he said, he would ban it.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding abortion, which was behind many of the Republican losses on Tuesday, Haley expounded a softer position than other candidates that might yet resonate with voters. \u201cAs much as I\u2019m pro-life, I don\u2019t judge anyone for being pro-choice, and I don\u2019t want them to judge me for being pro-life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, meanwhile, says he is so far ahead in the race for the nomination, more than 44 points, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2024\/president\/us\/2024_republican_presidential_nomination-7548.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to Real Clear Politics;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">according to Real Clear Politics<\/a> (RCP), as to make debate meaningless. In campaign messaging on Tuesday, he called it \u201ca battle of losers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While Trump\u2019s own candidacy is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/jul\/28\/donald-trump-investigations-criminal-charges-tracker\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:mired in legal troubles;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">mired in legal troubles<\/a> that could yet derail him, his remaining rivals are not even close. Scott, Christie and Ramaswamy are all polling in the low single digits, leaving DeSantis and Haley, themselves only at 13% and 9%, per RCP, as the most viable alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>There will be one more Republican debate, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on 6 December, before the 2024 primaries begin with the Iowa caucuses on 15 January.<\/p>\n<p>The field, already down to five in Miami after the withdrawal of former vice-president Mike Pence and non-qualification of North Dakota governor Doug Burgum, could be further reduced by then.
