As many as hundreds of tourists visit each day. The beech trees, which form an arch over a road, have become one of the most photographed spots in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Northern Ireland\u2019s Department for Infrastructure said that the six trees, in bucolic County Antrim, needed to be cut down because they were in poor condition and posed a risk to the public. An additional four trees will require remedial work and a fifth will be assessed, the statement said. The work will begin on Nov. 20.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis decision has not been made lightly and whilst the amenity value afforded by the corridor of trees is acknowledged, the safety of road users is paramount,\u201d the Infrastructure Department said. The government said it would engage with the landowner and others to determine a strategy for protecting the other trees.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cGame of Thrones\u201d is based on the first five novels in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/16\/arts\/television\/binge-watch-game-of-thrones.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">George R.R. Martin\u2019s series \u201cA Song of Ice and Fire.\u201d<\/a> The Dark Hedges appear in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/07\/travel\/following-game-of-thrones-to-belfast-and-beyond.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the first episode of Season 2<\/a>, when Arya Stark, disguised as a boy, escapes from her enemies in a cart, traveling north on the Kingsroad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cGame of Thrones\u201d was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/visitbelfast.com\/article\/game-of-thrones-filming-locations-belfast-northern-ireland\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">filmed<\/a> in locations around Northern Ireland, including at Titanic Studios in Belfast. Popular tourist locations for fans include Cushendun Caves, the beach where the priestess Melisandre gives birth in a cave to a supernatural assassin, and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/discovernorthernireland.com\/things-to-do\/ballintoy-harbour-p691281\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ballintoy Harbour<\/a>, built in the 1700s. There were more than 20 \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d filming locations in Northern Ireland, including medieval castles, harbors and coastlines, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/discovernorthernireland.com\/blog\/read\/2020\/06\/visit-game-of-thrones-filming-locations-b147\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the country\u2019s tourism board<\/a>, which advertises of \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d tours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Dark Hedges were also featured in \u201cTransformers: The Last Knight.\u201d There were originally about 150 trees, but today just 86 remain, with some having been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-northern-ireland-44495428\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">damaged in storms or by rot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The trees that make up the Dark Hedges, which sit on privately owned land on Bregagh Road, were planted by the Stuart family in the 18th century. They were arranged to impress visitors as they approached the entrance to a Georgian mansion, Gracehill House. According to local lore, the area is haunted by a ghost known as the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/amyscrypt.com\/hauned-dark-hedges\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grey Lady<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A line from one of Martin\u2019s books, \u201cA Storm of Swords,\u201d gives readers a sense of how foreboding the Kingsroad could be: \u201cI\u2019d stay well clear of that kingsroad, if I were you,\u201d a peasant says. \u201cIt\u2019s worse than bad, I hear.
