The local authorities issued several <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/razvozhaev\/3952\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warnings<\/a> about possible air assaults on Saturday morning, urging residents to stay calm and seek shelter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Saturday\u2019s attack, which was not immediately confirmed by Ukraine\u2019s military, came a day after Ukrainian forces launched a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2023\/09\/22\/world\/russia-ukraine-news\/russias-black-sea-fleet-in-crimea-is-again-targeted-in-a-strike?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">missile strike that damaged the Black Sea Fleet\u2019s headquarters<\/a>. Russia\u2019s Defense Ministry <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/mod_russia_en\/9895\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> that a serviceman was missing after that attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The back-to-back assaults on Crimea, which <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/19\/world\/europe\/ukraine.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the Kremlin illegally annexed in 2014<\/a>, are part of a Ukrainian campaign to hit deep behind Russian lines in an effort to sever Moscow\u2019s battlefield supply chain and undermine Russia\u2019s ability to hit Ukrainian territory from afar. In recent weeks, Ukraine has sharply accelerated the pace of strikes on the peninsula, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2023\/09\/14\/world\/russia-ukraine-news?smid=url-share#russia-destroys-five-naval-drones-fired-at-one-of-its-patrol-ships\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">hitting air-defense systems<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/12\/world\/europe\/sevastopol-explosion-black-sea-ukraine.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a submarine<\/a> and a command post.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since the start of Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion last year, Moscow has used Crimea to stockpile fuel and ammunition to be funneled to the battlefields in southern Ukraine, where Kyiv is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/22\/world\/europe\/ukraine-counteroffensive.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">currently trying to break through Russian defensive lines<\/a>. Ships from the Black Sea Fleet also have fired hundreds of missiles at Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cA lot of Ukrainian cities and towns are within reach from Crimea,\u201d Samuel Bendett, a Russian weapons analyst at the Center for Naval Analysis, said in an interview. \u201cControlling Crimea is essential if Russia wants to maintain its war effort and to keep Ukraine off balance and to maintain its positions in the territories it already captured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was not immediately clear whether Saturday\u2019s attack had hit any strategic targets. Mr. Razvozhayev said that debris had fallen near the pier in the Sukharnaya Bay \u2014 part of the larger Sevastopol Bay, which houses many military vessels and submarines \u2014 and in a park just a mile north of the harbor. The Russian state news agency Tass <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/emergencies\/1679335\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that emergency services had left for the scene and that passenger ship traffic had been suspended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The intensified attacks on Sevastopol and Russia\u2019s military fleet come as Kyiv is trying to secure part of the Black Sea following Moscow\u2019s withdrawal from a deal that allowed Ukraine to export its grain by sea. Russia\u2019s military warned at around the same time that it would consider any ship approaching a Ukrainian port a potential military threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since then, Kyiv has been trying to establish a safe corridor for civilian freighters. This week, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2023\/09\/22\/world\/russia-ukraine-news#a-cargo-ship-departs-a-ukrainian-port-with-grain-testing-the-black-sea-route\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">two ships loaded with grain safely sailed through the corridor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here\u2019s what else is happening in the war:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"css-1le37cb ez3869y0\">\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-1il0jfh evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Russian Attacks:<\/strong> Russian forces attacked multiple cities and villages over the past day, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/zoda_gov_ua\/22700\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ukrainian<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/olexandrprokudin\/1385\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">authorities<\/a> said on Saturday. At least three civilians were killed and dozens of others injured in strikes on the Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Poltava regions. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-1il0jfh evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Poland Dispute:<\/strong> President Andrzej Duda of Poland <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pap.pl\/en\/news\/grain-dispute-will-not-seriously-impact-relations-ukraine-says-duda\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> on Friday that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/21\/world\/europe\/poland-ukraine-weapons-grain.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a dispute with Ukraine over grain imports<\/a> would not significantly affect the countries\u2019 bilateral relations, in an apparent move to ease recent tensions. Poland last week decided to maintain a ban on Ukrainian grain imports, in defiance of the European Union\u2019s policy, arguing that cheap Ukrainian grain undermined its domestic market. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1il0jfh evys1bk0\">The move prompted Ukraine to filed a complaint before the World Trade Organization, and President Volodymyr Zelensky to tell the U.N. General Assembly that some European countries were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2023\/09\/20\/world\/russia-ukraine-news\/poland-and-ukraine-have-made-tit-for-tat-moves-in-recent-days?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">politicizing the grain issue<\/a>.
