The winner, a French collector, asked to remain anonymous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The sale comes just before the new Ridley Scott film \u201cNapoleon,\u201d starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby, hits theaters on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The hat, which auctioneers had expected would sell for between \u20ac600,000 and \u20ac800,000, is one of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/10\/24\/arts\/design\/napoleons-hat-is-back-in-vogue.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">some 20 hats<\/a> said to still exist of Napoleon\u2019s 120 two-cornered military dress hats that he wore as part of his everyday uniform. Just four or five of those are in private collections and the rest are displayed in museums or held by the French government, Mr. Pitchal said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The one that sold on Sunday had been part of a collection of Napoleon items belonging to a French businessman, Jean Louis Noisiez, who died last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2018, a faded and torn black hat attributed to Napoleon and said to have been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/18\/world\/europe\/napoleon-hat-auction-waterloo.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">dropped on the battlefield at Waterloo<\/a> sold for more than $400,000. In 2014, one of Napoleon\u2019s hats sold for more than $2 million, the previous record, to Kim Hong-Kuk, the South Korean founder and chairman of the Harim food conglomerate; it went for about five times the asking price. That hat came from a collection belonging to Monaco\u2019s royal family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other auctions of Napoleon memorabilia in recent years have included portraits, letters, his cologne bottles, a knife used in a foiled assassination attempt, a gilded crib, a bejeweled hunting rifle <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/17\/world\/europe\/in-new-napoleonic-era-his-hats-and-stockings-rise-to-power.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">and even his stockings<\/a>. An <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/arts\/culture\/la-et-cm-napoleons-engagement-ring-josephine-auction-20130324-story.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">engagement ring belonging to Napoleon\u2019s wife<\/a>, Josephine, went for $1.2 million in 2013.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Napoleon, an outsider from Corsica who rose to rule France in 1799, has long fascinated collectors around the world. The first auction of his belongings happened in the years after his death in 1821 on the island of Saint Helena, where he was living in exile, and the value of Napoleon relics has since risen, Mr. Pitchal said. Most of the 130 items belonging to him at the auction on Sunday sold, but a few unsold items, including a sword belonging to Josephine and a pistol, will be auctioned off again, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Napoleon rose to power after the French Revolution in 1789. He became the French emperor in May 1804 and led France\u2019s recovery after the revolution.
