(Amazon Photo)<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>As Amazon gears up to build and launch thousands of satellites for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/tag\/project-kuiper\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Project Kuiper constellation;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">Project Kuiper constellation<\/a>, it\u2019s talking up the space-based broadband network\u2019s potential to enable new options for managing data traffic with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/tag\/aws\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Amazon Web Services;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">Amazon Web Services<\/a> \u2014 including private connectivity services that never touch the public internet.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon also announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/innovation-at-amazon\/amazon-project-kuiper-aws\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Japan\u2019s Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., NTT Docomo and SKY Perfect JSAT have formed a strategic collaboration;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">Japan\u2019s Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., NTT Docomo and SKY Perfect JSAT have formed a strategic collaboration<\/a> with Project Kuiper to bring advanced satellite connectivity options to their customers. NTT and SKY Perfect JSAT plan to distribute Kuiper services to enterprises and government organizations in Japan, while NTT Group companies will use Project Kuiper to boost wireless broadband connectivity for customers.<\/p>\n<p>NTT and its associated companies, along with SKY Perfect JSAT, join <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2021\/amazons-project-kuiper-verizon-join-forces-satellite-cellular-connectivity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Verizon;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">Verizon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2023\/amazon-kuiper-satellite-vodafone-vodacom\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Vodafone;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">Vodafone<\/a> as telecom partners for Amazon\u2019s Project Kuiper, which aims to provide broadband data services to tens of millions of people around the world who are currently underserved.<\/p>\n<p>Such partners are expected to be among the first beta testers for Project Kuiper\u2019s network in the second half of 2024. Two weeks ago, Amazon said that two prototype satellites <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2023\/amazon-project-kuiper-satellites-ace-space-tests\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:achieved a \u201c100% success rate\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">achieved a \u201c100% success rate\u201d<\/a> in a series of orbital tests, opening the way for mass production to begin next month at a factory in Kirkland, Wash.<\/p>\n<p>Project Kuiper is far behind SpaceX\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/tag\/starlink\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Starlink satellite network;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">Starlink satellite network<\/a>, which already has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/11\/11\/the-rapid-rise-of-elon-musks-starlink-satellite-internet-business.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:more than 2 million subscribers;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">more than 2 million subscribers<\/a>. Starlink\u2019s satellites are built in Redmond, Wash., not far from Project Kuiper\u2019s HQ. To catch up with Starlink, Amazon plans to leverage synergies with AWS as well as the company\u2019s other lines of business, including Prime Video and online retail sales.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caas-iframe-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"caas-iframe youtube\" style=\"padding-bottom:56%\" data-type=\"youtube\">\n<blockquote data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2TmM_lER1x0?feature=oembed\"><p><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Project Kuiper demonstrates end-to-end network connectivity\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2TmM_lER1x0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Even before the satellite network is in place, Amazon is emphasizing the availability of secure, end-to-end connectivity through Project Kuiper and AWS as a selling point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRunning the Kuiper network in the cloud means we can rapidly extend our residential connectivity services to countries around the world and help our business customers access the data and services they need from virtually any location on the planet,\u201d Rajeev Badyal, vice president of technology for Project Kuiper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/innovation-at-amazon\/amazon-project-kuiper-aws\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:said today in a news release;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">said today in a news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon says its software-defined network will manage data traffic to optimize network capacity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy using AWS to support the Kuiper network, we can offer our business customers even more choice and flexibility and help tailor performance to their use cases,\u201d Badyal said. \u201cThe same is true for public-sector customers who need secure access to sensitive datasets and workloads stored in AWS GovCloud (US).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AWS CEO Adam Selipsky highlighted Amazon\u2019s private connectivity service today at the <a href=\"https:\/\/reinvent.awsevents.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:AWS re:Invent;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">AWS re:Invent<\/a> conference in Las Vegas. In the future, Project Kuiper will offer similar options for moving data privately into customers\u2019 own data centers or other public clouds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine the power of delivering, in very hard-to-reach places, the ability to access the internet with the same kind of speed and reliability that most of us take for granted every day.
