The Joyce Theater will honor the drummer, composer and activist Max Roach<\/a> with a centennial celebration as part of its spring\/summer season, the theater announced on Monday.<\/p>\n Curated by Richard Colton and produced by the Joyce, \u201cMax Roach 100\u201d (April 2-7) will pay tribute to the jazz musician\u2019s legacy<\/a> with a multigenre program that includes a work by Ronald K. Brown<\/a> with dancers from the Havana-based Malpaso Dance Company<\/a> and Brown\u2019s own troupe, Evidence<\/a>, set to \u201cPercussion Bitter Sweet,\u201d Roach\u2019s 1961 Afro-Cuban album.<\/p>\n A performance by Roach\u2019s band and a recording of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will set the sound for another production, \u201cThe Dream\/It\u2019s Time,\u201d by the Philadelphia street dance company Rennie Harris Puremovement<\/a>. A solo work by the tap artist Ayodele Casel<\/a> set to a series of duets with Roach and the jazz pianist Cecil Taylor<\/a> rounds out the commemoration.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a celebration of all the genres that he was part of,\u201d said Linda Shelton, the theater\u2019s executive director, noting that Roach once sat on the Joyce\u2019s board. \u201cWe felt we had a connection to him and could do the project justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Programmed under Danni Gee<\/a>, the 22-week season, which runs from March through August, will present 19 dance companies.<\/p>\n It opens with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago<\/a> (March 12-24), a two-week, two-program engagement that includes Darrell Grand Moultrie\u2019s<\/a> \u201cDichotomy of a Journey\u201d; the New York premiere of \u201cNevermore,\u201d Thang Dao\u2019s<\/a> gothic work; and \u201cDear Frankie,\u201d Rennie Harris\u2019s tribute to Chicago house music and culture<\/a>.<\/p>\n International offerings include Sydney Dance Company<\/a> with \u201cab [intra]\u201d (April 16-21), a work meaning \u201cfrom within\u201d in Latin that explores primal instincts and impulses; and the Netherlands company Introdans<\/a> with \u201cEnergy\u201d (June 11-16) in the troupe\u2019s first return to the Joyce in more than a decade. The latter will present a geographically diverse program, including a performance by the London choreographer Akram Khan<\/a>, \u201cKaash,\u201d which melds contemporary dance with the Indian classical dance form Kathak; and Mauro Bigonzetti\u2019s<\/a> \u201cCantata,\u201d a portrait of southern Italy with swirling duets and a lively ensemble.<\/p>\n Also in the lineup are Joyce classics like Trisha Brown Dance Company<\/a> (March 26-31), with \u201cIn the Fall,\u201d a new work by the French choreographer No\u00e9 Soulier; Gibney Company<\/a> (May 7-12), with a new work by Jermaine Spivey and Spenser Theberge; and the return of tanzmainz, the contemporary dance company of Staatstheater Mainz in Germany, for an encore performance of \u201cSoul Chain<\/a>,\u201d Sharon Eyal\u2019s dance about longing and loneliness, set to a soundscape by the electronic composer Ori Lichtik.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re still in full throttle,\u201d Shelton said of the upcoming season. \u201cWe\u2019re still taking a lot of risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
