Even Baumann is skeptical. The original band\u2019s success, in his view, was less about genius than serendipitous timing. \u201cYou can\u2019t really recreate what happened in the \u201970s,\u201d he said. \u201cYou don\u2019t have the same kind of instruments, you don\u2019t have the audience, you don\u2019t have the atmosphere, you don\u2019t have the cultural environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with a cover,\u201d Baumann added. \u201cBut it\u2019s not the original, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n
Quaeschning has heard it all before, even in response to projects led by Froese, like a cantata trilogy<\/a> based on Dante\u2019s \u201cDivine Comedy.\u201d In the 2000s, Froese himself recorded new versions of several Tangerine Dream albums, including \u201cPhaedra,\u201d \u201cTangram\u201d and \u201cHyperborea.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m used to people saying, \u2018This is not Tangerine Dream,\u2019\u201d he said, laughing. \u201cBut what is Tangerine Dream?\u201d Anyone hearing \u201cElectronic Meditation,\u201d the group\u2019s clangorous 1970 debut, then \u201cPhaedra,\u201d its sequencer-driven 1974 landmark, and \u201cOptical Race,\u201d a slick digital release from 1988, would find it hard to reconcile the differences, he said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s hard to spot the Tangerine Dream sound from a distance,\u201d Quaeschning said, \u201cbut the feeling and the concept were always there. And it feels quite right at this moment.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cQuantum Gate,\u201d<\/a> released in 2017, and \u201cRaum,\u201d<\/a> its 2022 follow-up, sound very much like Tangerine Dream, and not just because material by Froese was used. \u201cThe idea was going back to everything Edgar had done with Tangerine Dream in the \u201970s and \u201980s,\u201d Quaeschning said, \u201cwith contemporary sound design and the idea that everyone has a role in the band, like an orchestra.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
