{"id":9500,"date":"2023-12-23T07:59:30","date_gmt":"2023-12-23T12:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/leo-reich-likes-nothing-better-than-a-movie-where-nothing-happens\/23\/12\/2023\/"},"modified":"2023-12-23T07:59:30","modified_gmt":"2023-12-23T12:59:30","slug":"leo-reich-likes-nothing-better-than-a-movie-where-nothing-happens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/leo-reich-likes-nothing-better-than-a-movie-where-nothing-happens\/23\/12\/2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Leo Reich Likes Nothing Better Than a Movie Where Nothing Happens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Like a lot of comedians, Leo Reich works out the kinks in his stand-up routines by pacing the floor and talking to himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During the pandemic, that process reached a fever pitch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI think that\u2019s where a lot of the angst in the show was from,\u201d he said about \u201cLeo Reich: Literally Who Cares?!,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/21\/theater\/review-leo-reich-literally-who-cares.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">his Gen Z lampoon<\/a> now streaming on Max, \u201cthe fact that I was at home in the childhood bedroom where I\u2019d always lived with all of my old posters on the wall, just furious about the state of affairs that I was finding myself in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Under that strain, what began as a confessional, rather traditional set eventually morphed, he recalled in a video call from London, into a kind of self-parody \u201cof the worst excesses of my own personality.\u201d During the new set, Reich, 25, flop-sweats across the stage in short shorts and black eye makeup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s so funny having done a show that tries to send up on some level that whole idea of the fetishization of young talent,\u201d he said, before elaborating on snobbery, eating animals and the freedom of humiliation, \u201cand then essentially become what I was trying to lovingly criticize.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">These are edited excerpts from the conversation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9w1fbe e6idgb70\">1<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-vgpz0b e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-20f36d45\"><span>Two Pints of Beer and a Cigarette<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It can be hot sun, Coronas and a Camel Blue. It can be dead of winter, subzero temperatures, two pints of Guinness and a Marlboro Red. What I will say is that after you\u2019ve had two pints of beer and a cigarette, that is actually scientifically peak physical performance that a human being can get to. You will never feel as good as that in any other context.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9w1fbe e6idgb70\">2<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-vgpz0b e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-4241b4c3\"><span>Bird Watching and Pondering the Natural World<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There was a period when I was 9 to 15 where I was a really obsessive bird watcher. Not to get religious about this, but sometimes in our lives we have to sit back and be in awe of the majesty of nature. It also makes you think, \u201cGod, I really know nothing about the universe because this little guy is dressed in bright, bright blue, and there is no possible explanation for that that I could possibly make sense of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9w1fbe e6idgb70\">3<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-vgpz0b e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-597354e8\"><span>Bad Sketch Comedy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I passionately believe that perfection is the enemy of joy. To watch someone onstage do something that is on some level quite humiliating, but have the absolute best time doing it, you get a feeling of freedom and human connection that is unparalleled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9w1fbe e6idgb70\">4<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-vgpz0b e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-2781f03b\"><span>Movies Where Nothing Happens<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Any movie by Alexander Payne, Lena Dunham, Greta Gerwig, anything European. Anything where a woman with ennui wanders around a medieval town and runs her hand along a curtain. Something where someone wonders, \u201cIs this all there is to life?\u201d That\u2019s perfect to me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9w1fbe e6idgb70\">5<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-vgpz0b e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-2fe8eb\"><span>Offal<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If you\u2019re going to kill and eat an animal, you should do it in the style of a Renaissance king and make sure that you eat the whole thing. The perfect intersection of that for me is eating a liver, a kidney, some intestines \u2014 something where you truly cannot hide away from the fact that what you are doing out of your own free will as a human being is biting into something that was once alive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-9w1fbe e6idgb70\">6<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-vgpz0b e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-586559ae\"><span>Snobbery and Reverse Snobbery<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some things I\u2019m a snob about: superhero films, interior design, restaurants, grammar, weirdly. Things I\u2019m not a snob about: coffee, wine, reality TV, pop music. You\u2019ve got to choose a couple of things where you\u2019re like, \u201cListen up, I know more than you about this.\u201d And some other things where you\u2019re like, \u201cDon\u2019t over-intellectualize it. I\u2019m just here to have fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9w1fbe e6idgb70\">7<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-vgpz0b e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-5fb3c9d\"><span>Pining<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">You don\u2019t need any material reason or justification for it. You can pine after literally anyone, and your brain and heart will create the most gorgeous back story out of absolutely nothing that will sustain you, in my experience, years at a time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9w1fbe e6idgb70\">8<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-vgpz0b e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-2033847d\"><span>Dancing to \u201980s Pop<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I mean, if you are dancing in a club that\u2019s got lasers in it and, I don\u2019t know, some Pet Shop Boys, come on. It rewires your brain forever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9w1fbe e6idgb70\">9<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-vgpz0b e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-6599bc46\"><span>Novels Where Nothing Happens<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The person wandering around the city is probably from the \u201920s or \u201930s, and they\u2019re doing something like planning a party or collecting a package. The whole novel is a metaphor for civilizational decline. I\u2019m talking \u201cMrs. Dalloway\u201d \u2014 almost any novel by Virginia Woolf will work for this.
