A Colombian woman and the man she traveled with were reportedly killed in an armed attack in central Mexico City, only two days after arriving in the country to watch the match of her national team in the World Cup, her family and local authorities report.
Alba Lucía Castañeda Torres flew from Bogotá to Mexico City to have a dream vacation. According to her father, José Isidro Castañeda, she was eager to watch a World Cup game between Colombia and another nation.
The vacation trip in question was organized by Iván Luque, a 45-year-old man with whom she had been communicating for two years.
Castañeda claimed that this man promised to finance her trip, provide financial support, and help launch a business in Mexico City. Despite his warnings, the father said he could not stop his daughter, and she went anyway.
On Monday, June 8, two days after their arrival, Castañeda Torres and Luque were traveling in a black car near Paseo de la Reforma in the Morelos district of Mexico City, close to Tepito.
According to the Secretariat of Citizen Security, the car was followed by some people on two motorcycles. At the intersection, the attackers opened fire on the car, making it crash into a pole. Both Castañeda Torres and Luque died in this incident, and their murderers managed to escape, according to the authorities.
The Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office keeps the case secret. Local media reports, without an official confirmation, that Luque had an alias in Colombia and even a criminal record. Investigators are trying to find out whether this crime was actually a targeted assassination of Luque, with this young woman killed too, according to these sources.
Castañeda claims that he is appealing to foreign countries to help him bring back the body of his daughter. Due to being a poor man earning only 20 million Colombian pesos (which equals 100,000 Mexican pesos), he is unable to cover expenses for consular and funeral services, as well as transportation of the body.
“They took her from me, and she was the greatest thing in my life,” he said. “I can’t leave her there.”
