Mumbai is a city that never stops moving. It’s loud, it’s crowded, and it’s arguably one of the most visually complex places on the planet. When I touched down in India, I knew I didn’t want to just film the landmarks. I wanted to find a way to show the sheer density of life here. To do that, I had to get off the street and get some perspective.
The Mission for the Height
Shooting in a city like Mumbai presents a unique set of technical hurdles. On the ground, the “vibrant” atmosphere can quickly turn into a logistical nightmare for a filmmaker. There are wires everywhere, constant movement, and the dust can be brutal on your sensors.
I found a way onto a rooftop overlooking one of the city’s vast residential districts. Up here, the wind was whipping—you can hear it catching the mic—but the view was unparalleled. I wanted to capture the “Technical Wanderlust” of the city: the way the blue tarps, corrugated metal, and concrete structures stitch together into a massive human quilt.
To get the shot, I had to keep the camera steady despite the gusts. I leaned into the “cinematic utility” of a wide-angle lens to make sure the horizon felt infinite. The result? A sequence that shows just how far this city stretches toward the Arabian Sea.
Life in Layers
Standing on that ledge, you realize Mumbai is built in layers. Below me, the streets were a hive of activity—people heading to work, markets in full swing, and the constant hum of rickshaws. From the roof, it all blends into a singular, rhythmic heartbeat.
The light was hitting that perfect late-afternoon haze. In filmmaking, we call this “the glow.” It softens the harsh edges of the city and gives everything an almost golden, cinematic feel. It’s the kind of shot that reminds you why we travel. It’s not just about seeing a new place; it’s about feeling the scale of the world.
