Iberdrola, Masdar complete wind turbine installation at Baltic Eagle wind farm

Iberdrola and Masdar have completed turbine installation at their 476MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm joint venture in Germany.

The wind farm is equipped with 50 turbines, each with a unit capacity of 9.53MW, and is set to supply approximately 475,000 households with renewable energy upon becoming fully operational.

This will contribute to a substantial reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, estimated at around 800,000 tonnes annually.

Iberdrola executive chairman Ignacio Galán said: “The completion of turbine installation at the Baltic Eagle wind farm is an important milestone in what is a record year for Iberdrola’s offshore wind activity. With this project, Iberdrola is on track to have nearly 5GW of offshore capacity globally by the end of 2026.

“Once fully operational, Baltic Eagle, the second offshore wind farm in our Baltic Hub, will make a considerable contribution to Germany’s energy transition, providing homegrown clean energy to almost half a million homes, whilst reducing emissions.”

The wind turbines for this project were provided by Vestas and were installed by Fred Olsen Windcarrier.

Baltic Eagle represents the second phase of Iberdrola’s plans in the German offshore wind sector, following the operational Wikinger wind farm and preceding the planned Windanker project.

These projects collectively form the Baltic Hub, which is expected to exceed 1.1GW in total capacity by 2026 and stimulate investments of approximately €3.7bn ($4.03bn).

The completion of Baltic Eagle is a strategic component of Iberdrola’s growth strategy in Germany, a core market for the company.

For Masdar, the Baltic Eagle project marks several firsts: its inaugural collaboration with Iberdrola, its first venture in Germany and the occasion for its largest euro-denominated financing to date.

Masdar chairman and UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Dr Sultan Al Jaber said: “The installation of the fiftieth and final turbine of the Baltic Eagle offshore windfarm marks an exciting milestone.

“This achievement also strengthens Masdar’s partnership with Iberdrola, driving significant expansion in our offshore wind portfolio and advancing the global energy transition.”

The partnership between Masdar and Iberdrola, established in July 2023, was further solidified at COP28 with an agreement to invest €15bn in joint offshore wind and green hydrogen projects across key markets including the US, Germany and the UK.
