Iberdrola opens 243MW Fénix PV plant in Italy

Iberdrola has opened its Fénix photovoltaic (PV) plant in Sicily, with a generating capacity of 243MW.

The facility is expected to produce around 400,000MW-hours of electricity each year. The company states this is sufficient to meet the equivalent annual consumption of more than 140,000 households.

Fénix is situated across the municipalities of Centuripe, Belpasso and Paternò, spanning the provinces of Enna and Catania.

The development aims to enhance Italy’s renewable energy resources and is connected to the grid via 26km of medium-voltage lines and 9km of high-voltage lines.

Construction of the site involved more than 500 professionals at peak activity and included the installation of more than 413,000 bifacial PV modules.

The plant’s output is primarily allocated through long-term power purchase agreements with several Italian companies.

According to Iberdrola, these agreements are designed to stabilise energy costs for industrial clients, provide security of supply and support competitiveness.

The official inauguration of the Fénix plant was attended by Iberdrola Energía Internacional executive president Hugh Elliott and Iberdrola Italia country manager Valerio Faccenda.

Other attendees included the Spanish ambassador to Italy, Miguel Ángel Fernández-Palacios Martínez, as well as regional and local officials.

Iberdrola reports that the Fénix facility will increase Italy’s capacity for clean energy generation.

The majority of electricity generated at the site is set to be used under contracts with Italian businesses.

In February 2024, Iberdrola selected German engineering company IB Vogt to build the Fénix solar project.

Last month, Iberdrola commissioned the 195MW Tâmega Norte wind farm, located between Braga and Vila Real in the municipalities of Cabeceiras de Basto and Montalegre, Portugal.
