Communities in Nepal impacted by fatal flash flooding will receive £50,000 worth of support funded by officials in Guernsey.
The island’s government said its Overseas Aid & Development Commission had approved the funding, which would be given to Cornish-based charity Shelterbox’s response team in Nepal.
More than 1,300 people have been reported dead in the country following flooding which struck near the border with Tibet on 26 August.
Commission president Jennifer Strachan said she was pleased to support Shelterbox’s efforts to provide emergency shelter and essential household items to affected communities and families.
“Our thoughts and sympathies are with all those affected and we recognise the immense human suffering and hardship being experienced by communities across the region,” she said.
Alex Orme, head of programme funding at international disaster for ShelterBox, said: “For those in Nepal who have lost their homes, livelihoods and loved ones, this money will fund lifesaving aid items that will help families to protect themselves from the elements as they begin the difficult task of rebuilding their lives.
“With thousands of homes damaged or completely destroyed, the need for shelter has never been more urgent and donations such as this will enable us to work with local partners to provide emergency shelter and essential aid items such as blankets, sleeping mats, solar lights and kitchen sets, to those who need it most.”
Orme said the “right help” could “help to restore dignity, stability and hope to vulnerable communities when disasters strike without warning”.
“As Nepal moves from the immediate rescue phase of this disaster into the next stage of humanitarian response, attention is turning to the urgent needs of families who have lost their homes, possessions and access to essential services,” Strachan said.
She added Shelterbox was a well-established partner of the commission and had received previous emergency relief funding for other humanitarian crises.
