Russia said on Sunday that Ukraine had launched a large-scale drone attack overnight, with more than 600 drones targeting Moscow.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 201 of the drones had been destroyed by air defences in the Moscow region, while most had been intercepted before reaching the region.
Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, described the incident as one of the largest recent attacks. He said an 83-year-old man was killed when a drone crashed onto his property, while several people were injured in the Moscow region.
In the southern Russian region of Rostov-on-Don, at least three people died in a Ukrainian drone attack, according to the authorities. One person was reported to have been injured.
In the city of Podolsk, around 40 kilometres from Moscow, three people were reported to have been injured. A fire also broke out at a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, Vorobyov posted on Telegram. The staff managed to reach safety in time.
In Domodedovo, home to one of Moscow’s airports, a warehouse containing medicines caught fire, he said. Several residential buildings in the town were also damaged.
Damage to civilian infrastructure, including a school, was also reported in other towns.
Russia launches ballistic missile attack on Kiev
Ukrainian authorities reported earlier that Russia had launched a new overnight ballistic missile attack on Kiev.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said explosions had been heard in the Ukrainian capital and urged residents to remain in shelters while emergency crews were deployed.
Fires had been reported at multiple sites, Klitschko wrote on Telegram.
The Ukrainian Air Force said missiles, glide bombs and drone attacks had been recorded in other parts of the country, including the cities of Kremenchuk and Kryvyi Rih.
The statements from both sides could not be independently verified.
Ukraine has been fighting Russia’s full-scale invasion for more than four years. Kiev has repeatedly warned of dwindling stocks of interceptor missiles for its Patriot air defence systems, which are used to defend against ballistic missile attacks.
