Ultimate German V8 Showdown As Four Icons Face Off At a Drag Strip

Germany has built some of the world’s greatest fast cars, but for this battle, Carwow brought four modern heavyweights together for one brutal quarter-mile fight. Wagons, grand tourers, luxury sedans, and hybrids all lined up with one goal: to dominate the drag strip!

On one side sat the limited-edition Audi RS6 GT, an uncompromising take on Audi’s already feared super wagon. Next to it was the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S, a V8 bruiser with a reputation for savage launches.

Then came the new BMW M5 Touring, bringing huge power, all-wheel drive traction, and enough weight to bend physics. Finally, the mighty Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid arrived with the biggest horsepower figure of them all.

With over 2,700 combined horsepower on the line, CarWow’s drag strip was about to answer a simple question: Does raw power win, or does weight still matter?

Four Very Different Ways To Go Fast

Each car came armed with some serious firepower.

The Audi RS6 GT packed a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 making 630 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. It sent power through an eight-speed automatic to all four wheels and weighed around 4,575 lbs.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S used its own 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with 639 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. It was also the lightest car in the lineup at roughly 4,508 lbs, giving it a potential advantage.

BMW’s new M5 Touring combined a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with electric assistance for 727 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. The downside? A massive 5,456 lbs curb weight.

Then there was the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, producing a monstrous 782 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque from its twin-turbo V8 hybrid setup, weighing around 5,291 lbs.

The Porsche Hit Hardest

When the lights dropped, the Porsche wasted no time proving why it was the favorite.

It launched cleanly and surged ahead early, leaving the others fighting for second place. Despite being a luxury sedan with hybrid hardware onboard, it delivered the kind of acceleration expected from a dedicated supercar.

The Mercedes looked strong in some runs, especially from rolling starts, while the Audi stayed consistent and competitive throughout. The BMW packed a huge punch once moving, but its extra mass made launches more difficult than expected.

Final Quarter-Mile Results

When the dust settled, the Porsche took the win with a blistering 10.7-second quarter-mile pass.

Second place went to the Audi RS6 GT with an 11.3-second run, narrowly ahead of the BMW M5 Touring, which, incidentally, also clocked 11.3 seconds.

Last place went to the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S at 11.4 seconds, though it impressed in rolling races and braking tests.

Hybrid Power Has Changed The Game

This showdown highlighted how much modern performance has changed.

Once upon a time, lighter V8 machines would dominate a drag strip battle like this. Today, electrified torque and launch control technology can turn heavy luxury cars into quarter-mile monsters.

In this case, the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid crushed the field to take home the W.
