Warm weather welcomes the opening of many German Christmas markets

Unseasonably warm weather greeted the opening of many of Germany’s famed Christmas markets on Monday, with visitors unlikely to need to bundle up with hot mulled wine to feel warm and cosy.

The German Weather Service (DWD) forecast temperatures between 12 and 20 degrees Celsius for most of the country on Monday, with only the south-east expected to be cooler, at around 6 to 12 degrees.

The forecasters also said there will likely be moderate to stiff winds, with strong to gale-force gusts in the north-western half of the country and gale-force gusts in the mountains of the south and at sea off the northern German coasts.

Many German Christmas markets open during the week before the first Sunday in the Christian season of Advent.

Tuesday is expected to be slightly cooler, although the DWD still forecast highs of between 7 and 13 degrees.
