Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant reconnected to grid after days offline

The Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in south-eastern Ukraine, which is occupied by Russian troops, has been reconnected to the electricity grid after nearly three days offline, both the Moscow-installed plant management and Ukrainian nuclear operator Energoatom posted on Telegram.

A damaged high-voltage line had been repaired, both said on Saturday. The diesel generators that had been used to supply power since Wednesday have been returned to standby mode.

According to Ukrainian sources, this was the 19th power outage since Russian troops seized the plant at the start of the war in 2022. Both sides regularly accuse each other of being responsible for the outages through their military actions.

Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, with six reactors and a rated capacity of 6,000 megawatts, had been shut down for safety reasons.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has stationed observers at the plant and has called on both sides to exercise restraint.
