Germany’s far-right AfD surges to all-time high of 28% in INSA poll

Germany’s far-right AfD surges to all-time high of 28% in INSA poll

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) on Saturday climbed to an all-time high in a new poll as it surges ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservatives.

The survey by the INSA institute put the anti-immigrant AfD on 28%, the highest figure in the party’s history.

The AfD, which is under investigation by German intelligence services for its extremist views, is the country’s largest opposition party after finishing second in parliamentary elections last year.

The poll put the AfD four points ahead of Merz’s centre-right bloc, which has seen a drop in support in recent weeks amid soaring oil prices due to the war in Iran.

Merz’s coalition partner, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), was unchanged on 14%, with the opposition Greens falling by one point to 12% and The Left stable on 11%.

The polling firm surveyed 1,203 voters between April 20-24.

Other polls in recent weeks have also recorded a rise in support for the AfD, with YouGov putting the party on 27% in a survey on April 15.
