Volkswagen’s China-focused Jetta brand showed its next phase with the debut of a new concept SUV, but this one has little to do with the compact sedan North American buyers associate with the name.
Unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show, the Jetta X concept previews the brand’s move into electrified vehicles in China, where Jetta has operated as a standalone marque since 2019. Positioned as an entry-level offering within the Volkswagen Group’s joint venture lineup, the brand has so far focused on low-cost gasoline-powered sedans and SUVs. That is set to change in the coming years.
Jetta says it plans to introduce four “New Energy Vehicles” by 2028, a category that includes both fully electric models and plug-in hybrids under Chinese market definitions. The first of those vehicles is expected to arrive as early as this year, and the Jetta X offers an early look at the design direction for that expansion.
While technical details remain limited, the concept is described as fully electric. Instead, the focus is on styling, which leans toward a more rugged, utility-focused look than the brand’s current lineup. The front end features slim LED lighting elements integrated into a wide horizontal opening, paired with a sculpted bumper that incorporates a skid plate and red tow hooks-details typically associated with off-road-oriented vehicles.
The Jetta X arrives as Volkswagen continues to reshape its strategy in China, placing greater emphasis on electrification and localized products. For Jetta, the shift represents an effort to stay relevant in a market where demand for affordable EVs and plug-in hybrids continues to grow, particularly among younger buyers.
