Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 3,342

The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela about a week and a half ago has risen to 3,342, according to official figures released on Sunday.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said in a post on X that about 16,740 people had been injured and more than 17,000 had lost their homes.

The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, followed by a series of weaker aftershocks. The coastal state of La Guaira has been among the hardest-hit areas.

Rescue teams from Venezuela, supported by emergency workers from several other countries, continued searching for survivors trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings.

Authorities said 190 buildings had been destroyed and at least 856 others had suffered severe damage, including several hospitals. Some bridges and roads remain completely impassable, complicating relief efforts.
